What's the starting point where hardware should be turned off immediately? My external hard drive reached the temperature of 147F (63 C). I turned it off due to this. Is this the temperature where I should be taking these precautions?

Might be high for an external HDD. But why do you keep it on all the time anyway?
Most computer processors can reach 70-90*C and most graphics card can reach 100*C
Its different for every component. But your internal HDD inside your computer will never get too hot at all. At the moment my internal HDD is doing a happy 41*C
(And yes i realised that your talking about an external HDD)
Conclusion: Cannot tell since every piece of hardware have their own max temperature.

HDD's are just fine even at 50'C and it's not the heat that breaks them, it's the sudden changes in temperature.

I really didn't realise you could check the temps of external HDD's :S
I would think it to be fine though, as mentioned above its the sudden change which is a problem. If worst came to worse, it'd probably stop itself before it fried!

An external HDD is just an internal HDD in a case...

Check HDD developer's website, they probally have the min/max temp on there.
