Title: Trying to get a new pc
Post by: Boromir on June 19, 2011, 08:40:07 pm
Hello, friends.
I am trying to replace my 8 years old desktop, but I have no knowledge about computers.. So I need your help.

I did some researches, and I found this desktop to be the best one that I can buy with my budget.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Studio+XPS+8100+Desktop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i7+Processor+/+8GB+Memory+/+1.5TB+Hard+Drive/1244502.p?id=1218240957609&skuId=1244502#tabbed-customerreviews (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Studio+XPS+8100+Desktop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i7+Processor+/+8GB+Memory+/+1.5TB+Hard+Drive/1244502.p?id=1218240957609&skuId=1244502#tabbed-customerreviews)

It would be really appreciated if you could give me your thoughts on this system.

Buying PC by parts and asking someone to build it for you might save you cash.
CPU - Intel i5 2500k
Graphic card - Asus HD 6950
RAM - GSKILL PC3-10666 8GB CL9 NT (2X4GB) DDR3
Mobo - Asus P8P67 PRO Rev. B3
PSU - Corsair TX-750W V2
HDD - Pretty much any 1TB 7200RPM hdd will do
Case - NZXT Phantom

Edit : Corrected once again... and again lol

Case should be personal prefference also I don't agree with the 6950, Alarba. The GTX 560/570 are both cooler and quieter and overclocked are more powerful. What he said though is that he has limited PC knowledge. If you tell us a budget, Boromir many of us can help you pick out then assemble components. It really is child's play to be honest and I can offer you detailed descriptions and pictures if requested. Think about that.

Otherwise that PC really isn't that bad if you decide to go for the "Pay and forget" approach. It's definitely too much money for what it offers though and what Alarba said about buying seperately saving you cash is very, very true.

IMO nVidia consumes more power, but you are right, they are cooler and overclock better.

the best one that I can buy with my budget.
So i would guess he has around 1000$ to spend ( since the pc costs 1050$ )

I have enough money to buy the most expensive one, but I do not want to spend more than 1000 dollars on a pc.
So, yes, $1000 is technically my budget.

Hope this helps, the PC is REALLY good. All you need for latest games and software with your budget.

Don't forget that along with a Dell desktop comes a Dell warranty. This will make things much easier for you should you have any problems in the future. By building a pc yourself, you lose that warranty and even though you'll still get individual warranties on each part, it'll be more of a hassle. For example, sometimes it isn't clear which part is causing problems and you would have to do extensive testing to figure it out..

As for the pc, it's cheaper by $100 if you buy it directly from Dell.

There's also a new version of it which offers a CPU upgrade from 2.93 GHz to 3.4 GHz, a hard drive upgrade from 1.5TB to 2TB, a graphics card update from 5770 to 6770 for the same price: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Studio+XPS+Desktop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i7+Processor+/+8GB+Memory+/+2TB+Hard+Drive/2834137.p?id=1218354839167&skuId=2834137 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Studio+XPS+Desktop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i7+Processor+/+8GB+Memory+/+2TB+Hard+Drive/2834137.p?id=1218354839167&skuId=2834137)

First off, ask yourself the question. For what purpose am I buying a new computer?
Based upon your answer then people can start suggesting things, now half of the people here will recommend you a 'uberleet hardcore gaming system' whilst you might don't need that if you just want to play SA:MP with an higher FPS, for example.

They probably don't sell it in these new desktops anymore, but i'd recommend a GTX295, or two.

CPU : i5 2500K
Mobo : Asus P8P67 Pro / LE ( if you're not going SLI )
RAM : 8GB DDR3 Kingston 1600MHZ ( i bought that for 35 euros, 8GB isn't an overkill with these new sandy bridge CPU's anymore,.. )
GPU : GTX295 or two
PSU : Corsair TX850

Guys, We don't have an idea what kind of system he actually needs, why are you suggesting these big systems if there is a possibility he has no use for them anyway?

It depends on how you need a computer, you can't specify specs if you don't know what the PC will be used for!

I'm better a building to a budget of about half this price really, so I wouldn't be one to judge.

But I paid 450GBP for my PC total, and it runs GTA IV for example, at max settings at 45FPS, I see no need for higher spec than that :P
