Title: [$2m for Solution] I lose wireless connection when I plug USB
Post by: Clone on July 03, 2011, 03:18:14 am
Since I upgraded to windows 7, whenever I plug ANYTHING into ANY usb port on my laptop, I suddenly stop picking up any wireless networks. None at all. Also the device plugged in works for about 30 seconds before the laptop stops picking up that aswell.

Before you mention it, my drivers are up to date.. well at least I think so, there weren't any drivers on the software page which included USBs. if there are any driver that could effect this, please tell me.
Here's my laptop's drivers page: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/supportMyProduct.do?service=UK (http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/supportMyProduct.do?service=UK)

Please I really need my USB ports, I've been living with this problem a few months now, I've had enough of it. If you have any idea what could be wrong please tell me.

Thank you.

$2,000,000 SA:MP Money if you give me a solution!

That is surely a possibility but the person mentions he has the problem since an upgrade to his operating system. USB devices to not require a lot of power, though. With that said, I do not think that is the problem at all.

First things first, which laptop do you have (Model number included) ? How old is it ? What version of windows 7 do you have ? Are there other things that do not work apart from the problem with your USB port ?

It's an almost 3 year old system - Toshiba satellite L350-170, Windows 7 home premium 32 bit

Probably wasn't even worth upgrading it to Windows 7, it only has 2GB RAM which is practically the minimum.

No idea whats causing the problem though.

The laptop I have is a 5 year old HP Compaq nc8230 with only 2 gigs of ram. It's a lot faster than XP.

could be a number of issues, basically the USB could be shorting out the wireless, the USB could be taking power from the wireless, could be corrupt USB ports, could be corrupt wireless card. i doubt it has anything to do with windows 7 being installed, and is more of a hardware issue than Software, your local computer shop should be able to open it up and see if there is anything they can fix(as its probably not under warranty)

1-try reinstalling the drivers
2- go on device manager and power option uncheck Allow this device to turn off to save power i think it will work
3- otherwise the USB is taking all the power of the PC what you are plugging ?

Right mouse click on the save removal thing on your taskbar, then click on all USB sticks to remove them, and plug them out.
Plug the Wireless internet USB in, get connectivity, and see if it works with other USB devices now.

Stand up, swing your right leg backwards and kick the PC as hard as possible. If that doesn't help you can contact any kind of hardware support service.

Sounds like either a defect on your motherboard (not able to get enough power) or your power supply is to weak, but since you are a laptop it's slightly different the way it get it's power.

P.S Your wireless is integrated in your laptop or are you using a USB Wireless Adapter?

I dont think you understand, when I plug ANYTHING, even my ipod into usb, wireless just shuts off..

And Nexxt, its integrated Realtek adapter. And it's fully updated on drivers.

Maybe it is the power supply then? If its anything like the way a PC draws power, then it must surely be coming from the same rail?
If you can rule out an issue with the motherboard, do it. This might mean asking for professional help, but it'll save a few headaches.

Alternatively, it could be a drivers based issue. If you can, try updating your BIOS primarily, as this may not be allowing a network card and a USB card to consume power at the same time. Similarly, check your 'power plan' in Control Panel, to ensure that the network card is always allowed to draw power.

If you still have no joy, type msinfo32 in the start menu and look under 'Hardware Resources' and then 'Conflicts/Sharing' to see if there is any drivers playing around with each other.

This has nothing to do with power.. don't suggest stuff if you don't know about it....

Alright, I've read through your topic and I can first of all conclude that your issue is a software based one. As you've mentioned they used to work before you installed Windows 7... That automatically means it CANNOT be a hardware issue. Neither do I understand why any of you would suggest it having anything to do with his power supplication.. First of all, a laptop doesn't have a PSU, it has a battery.. But that's not even important because Toxic says it used to work BEFORE he altered his SOFTWARE, not his hardware.

The only possible way this could be a hardware issue, is if he dropped his laptop 6 feet while installing windows 7.....

Having said that, I would like to continue on my theory. Because your issue appeared as soon as you installed a new Operating System, it's software based. When installing Windows 7 it also installs other / new drivers and other kind of software alterings / updates.

What can you do about it? Not a lot. You have to look for OTHER drivers for your USB handling and of course your wireless adaptor. This doesn't mean NEW drivers, I mean OLDER drivers which you might have previously used. Find out what kind of wireless card your laptop has and DOWNGRADE its drivers to a previous version.

Also, are you sure this happened RIGHT after you installed Windows 7 or did you also have an accident with your laptop..? Because the only hardware based explaination for this could be you plugging in the USB device very harsh so that it might've caused some kind of disturbance between the USB ports and wireless card. In laptops USB and wireless are ''passing'' eachother's circuits because they're both inputs but of different kinds.

Anyways, I would first downgrade your wireless adaptor drivers to earlier versions,

Good luck

installed a new Operating System, it's software based. When installing Windows 7 it also installs other / new drivers and other kind of software alterings / updates.
That's why I mentioned about conflicts, as the original drivers may well still be lurking around, messing with the new ones.

Salmonella's theory makes sense, but I'd also like to add another thing. I should have added this before but, after I installed win 7, around 15 minutes later the wireless dropped for the first time, without USB. I got a friend to repair it for me, he managed to, but then I discovered that it happened after plugging USB. I know that when he "repaired" it, he altered registry and drivers.

Your friend screwing around with the drivers may very well be the reason your drivers are now in conflict with eachother.. But as I said, just try downgrading / altering the drivers again.

I would agree with Sal... back-up your data and attempt to reinstall Windows 7.

go add hardware have a look insert your usb device, then go onto it add the hardware, fit has a disk insert the disk, and follow steps on screen, if not, go to Driveragent type in google and scan your computure find the drivers for the usb ports, thats another solution,
or reformt your computure by using system restore or insert your windows 7 disk and go back to factory settings, but if its a games controller for example, playstation 3 dullshock you may have to download a program called 'mr t controller' but if you have already downloaded something like that you may have to go and unistall it becuase some of them programs have issues what takes the working of the internet away, i had the same problem, so either, search for the driver manully, go to driveragent and install all drivers, or search for 'MR T Controller' which is if its a games console controller doing it, or if you have downloaded something off the internet so the games console controller or anything eles in the usb drive to work unistall it now, becuase it blocks some drivers from working, and reinstall a diffrent program, hope this helps and if you need a help with any of this, besure to pm me or add me on msn:[email protected] or contact me on BBM:22350BF4.. good luck

It is possible that your south/northrbidge which controls both Wireless and USB is running out of bandwidth as well. Tried connecting a USB device that just draws power instead of something like a pen drive/iPod so you can totally rule out power issues? It happens to me sometimes when running a 2tb external HDD, a 16gb pen drive and my phone/HD webcam on the laptop - it says the USB controller is out of bandwidth and everything crashes at the same time.

That only happens in cases such as you named for yourself - with a shitload of stuff attached.. But the reason that is unlikely isn't because of that, it's because it worked before the installation / his friends altering the software.

Definately software based

Carl, I tried using that driveragent thing, updated the drivers and that set it off itself without anything in the USB.. o_O

I might just put the PC in for repair with a PC repair business.

Well the issue with Win 7 is it tries to run many, many drivers at the same time and may be using a lot of the USB controller's bandwidth, causing all the crashes. Try uninstalling all the drivers instead and see if everything still works. I bet it would as Win7 has it's own version of them somewhere.

This should do the job:

Open Run in Accessories, type Regedit and hit enter. Locate this:
HKeyCurrentUser\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\DnsCacheEnabled"=dword:0

You need to change the dword for DnsCacheEnabled to 0. After this, perform a soft reset.
If DnsCacheEnabled does not exist, create it as a DWORD value.

Good luck :).
