Title: Argonath - What has it taught/changed in your life?
Post by: Cutt3r on August 03, 2011, 06:32:40 pm
I have been here almost 4 years now....4 years is a long time for me to be on a virtual community, and while going through my old posts a lot of what I was has changed over the years. I have made an attempt to showcase the positive changes/teachings in me that have occurred since my association with Argonath in September 2007 and would like to know what positive changes it has brought about in you all too.

So, what have I learnt? What has changed? Let me explain:

1) A major part of the change has been my perception of many things which were previously taboo to me, my understanding of the world. For example, homosexuality was something I could not tolerate. I was homophobic, that is the truth. But when I came to know that some of my friends were homosexual(some even bi-sexual) I slowly began accepting it as an 'alternative yet natural type of sexual orientation that can exist in the world'. This has definitely made me a better individual, in the sense, I have been able to accept an 'unthinkable social taboo' as part of the world, something which I doubt would happen if I spoke to n number of people in my region. I have been able to accept people for who they are and not who they should not be.

Similar was the change in view with regard to usage of the term nigga(I used to consider it as racist, in fact, anything starting with 'nig' for that matter), but later on learnt that all grammatical variations of the word need not be racist.

2) Argonath has helped me a lot with my patience levels. If anything my patience levels has increased manifold after dealing with various sorts of people.

3) I have learnt that distance does not matter when it comes to friendship. It does not matter if we do not see each other ever. We know that there exist people who call themselves Blackeagle, Cephalectomy, Aragorn, xcasio, Squeak, Pancher, Frank_Hawk and so many others, although those may not be their real names. But there are real people behind those fake names, real people with real emotions and a real friendly supporting arm.

4) Although some would say that seeing something is believing or seeing is everything, I have learnt that what is not seen may sometimes be more important that what is. An example is the case of those players who engage in genuine, selfless acts of kindness to others and do not remotely consider glorifying their deeds in any open forum, although the circumstances may warrant it. Those are the real heroes of Argonath and as they would want it, I will not be naming those unsung heroes here.

So...what have you guys learnt?  :) I am expecting replies from Argo players who have been year more than a year plus atleast, as it would be too little a time for my newer friends(less than a year old players) to be able to reply properly on this topic, as you have been with Argonath for a considerably short time.

Well, this is also my fourth year on Argonath RPG, and I must say, I do not regret it at all. I have enjoyed all ups and downs. I've got attached to this community in a very special way. There is no way I can describe it, and it would be really sad if this once falled down...

Over to your question, Butt3r..

I have learned to use a wider vocabulary. My English has become a lot better than what it was when I first started. I was the best in Oral and Writing English in my old class, which I am really proud of. I have also learned that everything takes practice. This helped me with my studies, and probably raised my grades a lot...With help by some motivation.

To be honest, I've also got a lot of new friends, which I would love to keep in touch with. This is of course the most important thing. I have also received a lot of educational advice, and tips from various players online, which I am really grateful for. I am 100 percent sure that Argonath RPG has something to do with the fact that I will do my best to get an Economic degree

Well, I'm newer here, starting my third year here.

I know for a fact that without Argonath RPG, I would still be texting etc in slang.

Another statistic is that I would have spent another 480 hours studying instead of visiting the forums

I am interested to know what caused this.

Argonath taught me that life ain't fair, and that one just has to deal with it and move on.

I still remember the day where you set me my very first house, Cutt3r.
Looking back at how I was I cannot really see if I've changed, but then again it was only a year ago. :D
I suppose that I'm still the same guy I was a year ago, only my understanding of the server and the people in it has grown by a lot.

I have learned a lot despite being here only 2 years which is a short time compared to some...

I learned that the term "You dont know what you have, till you have lost it" applies even online with friendships that are virtual

I learned that the older generations can never understand that relationships can actually start online

I have come to understand that a person can act one way in real life, but their true self with always reflect in the way they treat others online

I have also had some things happen that have changed me in a negative way. for example I have come to dislike many people of certain cultural backgrounds based of how they have treated others in online interaction. I have also began to lose the trust in people i once had, after having been lied to online so much.

I think the biggest thing i have learned is that this quote is actually true, and despite the older generation, including my parents, not understanding it, i still belive it completely.

"Time enjoyed wasting is not wasted time"

My teenage years were spent with Argonath RPG, and many of my encounters here taught me more about life then any real world encounter, because the people here are real, they will always be real, and they will always have a place in my heart as my friends.

I'll keep this short because I'm tired and I've said it too many times in other topics, but Argonath is an amazing place. For such an open community, it really does feel like a second home to me with people close to me all around, and I have a lot to thank it for from which it has changed my life. Just to keep this short and simple, (because I could go on forever in detail about what amazing things Argonath has done for me), I'll just jump right into it. My passion for Law Enforcement: Ever since I was a little kid, I've wanted to be a cop. At times I would tell people I wanted to be an Ambulance Driver when I was very young because I feared being shot at, but I knew this was not my true passion...being an officer was. Over time, frustration and many screwed up things in society that I had witnessed slowly tore away at my belief that I may one day become a "cop". Well, thanks to Argo, RP'ing a cop here was as real (in a simple, fun way) as it gets, and it brought back my passion in a way that I can only describe as life-changing. I can't and won't explain any details about it, but let's just say that I'm very happy to be pursuing my passion again. Thank you Argo.

Seeing as I just wrote a paragraph on one thing alone when I was trying to keep it short, I'll just make a quick comment on the other major change Argonath had upon my life, of the many, many others: Love. When I first joined Argonath RPG so many years ago, I had yet to meet my first girlfriend of my life. Being one of the "good guys" out there, I didn't tend to get many females who wanted to be more than just friends with me. When my first gf came along and things happened, all was well for awhile. I won't go into details on it, but let's just say it later had a bad ending. Some of you may ask what this has to do with Argo and I'll tell you: Nothing. It's what happened years later...around September of 2009 or so, when I met the most amazing girl here. I don't think I need to say her name, but many of you know who she is. We had a long, happy relationship together, and although we aren't together today, we are still very close friends. Expanding upon this, the girl that I fell in love with after...a very close friend of mine who I also met in Argo and am with today still keeps me smiling on a daily basis whether we are doing RL things or playing here together. If it weren't for Argo's unusual sense of friendship that is bestowed upon it's community, I never would have met either one of these unbelievably wonderful girls. Again, I have Argo to thank for that... :)

P.S. I really need to learn to stop typing so much. Kept telling myself I'd keep it short and I wrote a freakin' book hahaha...

Well, although it's not a detailed explanation, I've got to say, that is a pretty awesome skill you obtained in Argo! :)

I am interested to know what caused this.

All my friends considered saying I see you, in text language for example i c u, and instead of mine it'd be myn etc.

I came into Argonath speaking more like that, and I got influenced by people giving tl;dr speeches into speaking properly when texting and on the internet. :D

Argonath helped me see the world in a way without actually travelling it.

Thanks to Argonath, I have not lost all hope in humanity and still believe there are some nice and smart people left on this planet. Then again, some moaners really can get on my nerves.

I now use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. I've learned things from other cultures; including their customs, history and geographic location(). Argonath has also allowed me to make great friends across the world, people I would actually hang out with in real life.
shit is SO CASH.

Same as Grzesiek. Now I teach others correct grammar (hopefully). I don't tolerate anything less ;-).

thats when i registered on the forum (tho i was here for a little bit before that), And like i said in the Argonath 5 year birthday topic. I have changed a hell of a lot since then, i was 15 when i started playing, tho what Ron and Ronnel used to say that i was mature for my age looking back on my original posts from my first week i wasn't at all.

I can see in my self that i am a lot more mature now, I can tollerate people a lot more now (thanks to hosting the IRL so many times), and also respect everyone for WHO they are and i take things with a lot more layed back prospective (the australian way? :P ).

When i started i was a 15 year old in year 10 not knowing what i was going to do with my life, i am no 20 years old, studying my third year of Multimedia Technology and soon to finish this course and move on to become a teacher. I know i can say this that i will be able to tollerate and in the end love my job thanks to Argonath and its Community for turning me in to who i am today!

Argonath thought me great spelling and English. Without Argonath, I would fail my school. Argonath thought me how to act, what to do and improved my behaviour much. Argonath changed me for the positive way and the negative way. The negative is that I am addicted.

Chatting / texting - When I started in Argonath, I was wondering what was lol... I got confused a lot.

How I argue, chat, act, react, talk has changed a hell of a lot.. All I can say is that Argonath has transformed me..

Argonath has improved my English, it was also the start for my Photoshop career, as I started off doing awkward signatures for myself and close friends, related to Grand Theft Auto. Look at me now.

The minute you let your guard down and start trusting people is when you will be backstabbed, This is something i defiently learnt from argonath..
On the positive side i have discovered some mature players who actually use their brain, do exist on the internet. something i picked up from argonath forums debate section.

June 26, 2008, I registered on the forums although I started playing in late 2007, it was one of the milestones in my life, Argonath is not just a simple online server or just in a simple game anymore, it has been blessed with the fortune that it stands out in so many lives and has changed so many lives alike, including mine, in enormous ways! It has taken a toll into my personal life and brought me so close to some of the most wonderful people I have ever met!

You don't have to be special, a geek, the jock, a businessman, the average bloke to appreciate this server for what it is, a world of its own!

I want this server to be like this for the rest of my life, I want to keep this place as a part of me and not something in history that I once loved! Growing up with these people, cultures, you get to appreciate life at a new level that you didn't know existed.

This server is my family, a place where I can go and feel comfortable and remember that I am having a great time.

I have developed new social skills, a new social attitude, communication skills that I have successfully put to use in real life, but most importantly, I have made new friends.

Go Argonath and keep changing peoples lives for the better!
