Post by: Norrage on September 08, 2011, 09:58:26 pm
Okay this is weird, a 4,6 eartquake hit The Netherlands, I know, its nothing, but its very large for the small country like us. It happend about 21:00, and the centrum was near the German / Dutch border. I think more news is comming up soon I think..

I know its nothing, but as said it actually it IS a large eartquake for The Netherlands.
At my house I felt some shaking, and we heard some noises too, its so weird..

Weird to see rare disasters happen.
Earthquakes should not appear in Holland..

I didn't notice anything, nor in the news tho.

First time i've ever heard of an earthquake in the Netherlands...

I was about to do my homework but first I went downstairs to get a drink and i sticked around because I heard something on TV.. My mom was on the phone and all of the sudden the person she was calling with said there was something shaking in his appartment.. My mom suggested it was an airplane but then on her twitter hundreds of people said ''earthquake'' or something of the kind.

This is the first time i have ever heard of an earthquake in the netherlands...

Guys and gals, I live in Nijmegen!

Everyone here noticed it. I was behind my PC and my monitor started shaking, it was f**king awesome! Everyone ran out to check what happened, and then twitter, facebook and that kinda things got flooded by messages like "WHAT THE F**K EARTHQUAKE?!"

And today all the teachers were like "Did y'all notice the earthquake, it was f**king awesome, I finally noticed one and I wasn't f**king sleeping motherf**kers!" My teacher was so happy

I know right, but it was a really small earthquake and I don't think there will be any huge earthquakes in The Netherlands, it's already unique there has been one!

Sure I care about huge earthquakes in other countries, but if there's an earthquake here, it's awesome!

It may be exciting for the first time to experience something new, but keep in mind you got lucky. If it had been a much larger one, your whole house could have collapsed on you. Remember your safety first and get everyone outside safely, away from any trees, buildings, or power lines.

As for it happening there, of all places, it's rare there because the tectonic plates often don't have large collisions in that side of the world, so the activity for earthquakes that you can actually feel are much less common than where I live, which is California. Ironically, California has the San Andreas Fault, (and the name in itself can be seen as a pun to this community, thanks to GTA), yet I've never felt a single earthquake, and that area is the most earthquake-ridden in the world. As far as I know, when I was younger, I slept through a very, very small earthquake one night, and I'm a very light sleeper. Since then I've heard no reports of any in my area, which is very lucky for me because I've lived in both Northern and Southern California.

I'm not trolling. It's scientifically impossible to exclude ANY location on the planet from an earthquake. Do the damn research.

No, Holland is not on a.. how do you say.. Plate that often creates earthquakes.

They are called tectonic plates, and yes, it actually is. The entire planet is made of them. Earthquakes are caused by them pushing together, separating, colliding, or moving on top of one another. So yes, Holland is on one, and it can have earthquakes.

I know how earthquakes are caused.
There are lots of plates, and some countries, for example Asian countries suffer from earthquakes and such disasters.
But Holland is NOT on a plate that causes earthquakes, I actually studied this a while ago.

The entire world is. It may not be common to Holland because the plate is not actively moving against any others, but that does not mean it can't have ANY earthquakes. They are possible anywhere in the world, it doesn't matter where you go. Yes, it's uncommon there, but it's not impossible.

You kind of did. Tectonic plates are constantly moving at an extremely slow rate. There's always the chance that in the future, the plate that Holland rests upon will experience a strong enough convection current that will cause the boundaries to lock against each other, thus resulting in a big earthquake.
