Title: Is a 6 core really worth it?
Post by: Reece on December 09, 2011, 10:39:56 am
Okay, so I'm looking to get a new CPU as I currently only have a Athlon x2 2.8GHZ...

I'm looking to either get a x4 II 3.6GHZ (http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-HDZ975FBGMBOX-Phenom-II-975/dp/B004LRO9AU/ref=sr_1_9?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1323423471&sr=1-9) or a x6 II 3.3GHZ. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Phenom-1100T-Six-Core-Processor/dp/B004DALW5K/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1323423471&sr=1-1)

Now all I will use it for it Gaming, the odd bit of Sony Vegas and Photoshop. I know there aren't many games that make use of 4 cores let alone 6.

Is it worth spending the extra money for something I'm not going to make use of?

I'd rather get myslef some more RAM with the money difference as I only have 3GB.

I'm getting a 6950 to go with this if that makes any difference.

I think you answered your own question.

If you use it mainly for gaming and occasional editing, I think a 6 core would be just a waste of money.

Ram is cheap AFAIK so get both..ANyway if you are gonna use that PC for the next 5 years there will be better games with more requirements.

Get it, it is a future investment.
You will already have trouble with games now, and about 3 years from now your troubles will skyrocket, but a 6 core wont let that happen

Photoshop is a program which uses RAM infront of raw processing power, so working with huge projects stresses more your RAM than your CPU.
Only when you render for instance a gigapixel panorama, then will raw processing power become more vital - for only the time of processing and stitching, that is. After that the project lies within your RAM.

Most games, even new ones, can only be adapted to use single core - for some you can set them to use more but you would have to perform this task every time starting the game as it can only be assigned from Task Manager - which does not have an ability to save the settings.

So yes, spend less money on a processor and use the saved amount on RAM. Your GPU is one of the best performance/price cards on the market out at the moment, so you should be good.

By the time there are games out that use x6 core... there will be x6 core processors that are twice as fast and half as cheap. It's NOT an investment really when PC hardware is so regularly outdated.

To get the most of your money, spend LESS and buy what you need for your requirements now, and upgrade only when you find it completely necassary.

Unless your rich/ have no other hobbies/ like to have the best PC specs regardless of functionality.

You can also wait for 2012 when all the new shit comes out and I'm pretty sure you will get more money for Christmas

I think you'll find with the newest version of Sony Vegas, with Nvidia cards anyway, the graphics card does most of the rendering work, and performs far faster than the CPUs anyway.

Computer components hold their value extremely well so buy what you need now and sell it later to upgrade. I don't see 6 cores being the minimum requirement in any game for a very very long time yet.

If I were you I'd buy these...

AM3+ Mobo - 36.99 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-M5A78L-M-LX-Motherboard-Unlocker/dp/B004ZOH1I6/ref=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1323510660&sr=1-4)
AMD FX4100 3.6GHz - 89.89 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Bulldozer-FX-4100-Socket-Processor/dp/B005UBNL0A/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1323510582&sr=1-1)

Total: 126.88

Which is cheaper than the cost of that new CPU...
