Title: Opinions on this Effects Rig?
Post by: Link9rly on January 18, 2012, 06:17:40 am
I'm making a computer dedicated to processing audio effects, but while having some compatibility to newer games at decent settings. It will not be overly expensive. Here are the components.

Change the GTX550 for GTX560

Change the GTX550 for GTX560

No, you can get an AMD card for the same price which will be better

Seagate - NO HELL NO

Get a COOLER MASTER HAF 912 Mid Tower case

Soundcards are useless unless your going to be paying $100+ for it

CX is horrible get the TX650
Also that 430 is not enough to power this build

Get a Full ATX not Micro you will regret it

Also I'm guessing your buying from newegg? If yes whats your budget?

~$700
I don't want this to become an expensive project. I already have another one that I could use since it has an i7. Just need to fix the processor. The soundcard is a good casual listening, but I have an audio interface (Alesis Multimix16). The GFX card might stay like that since it's cheaper.

Yea, this is what I thought until recently.

However, I advised it in somebody's build, and they get pretty poor performance in some games, including GTA IV.

Yes, GTA IV Engine sucks, worst console to PC port ever.

I have to lower some settings (all high minimum) running at 1920x1080 and I get around 35/40 FPS....

Yet I can run BF3 on all ultra settings, only AA turned to x8 rather than x16 and I get 60FPS (due to vsync turned on).

Go figure.

And yeah, don't EVER buy a Seagate HDD.

If the GTA IV Engine is shit, why does the GTX 280 run it at practically full settings at 50FPS?

The 6870 and the GTX 280 aren't that far apart in performance, lmao.

What the hell do you smoke?
The 6870 smokes the 280

Reece has a 6950 and is having problems with IV

Yeah, it may smoke it, but playing GTA IV it cannot keep up with many older cards...

I'm just supplying the fact...: Janeks' 6870 barely runs the game at low-medium on his 6870, whereas on my GTX 280 I run it at full, in fact, past the memory limit with no problem at all.

I aint smoking shit, I did not say the 280 was better, merely commented on the practical FPS, not the benchmarks.

It is me sir, who should be asking what you are smoking, as the 6870 certainly does not smoke the GTX 280 at GTA IV

AMD is shit. Don't buy cards from the 500 series if this isn't a main rig and you want good performance for low prices. Get a GTX 460. They're really good for what they cost on eBay.

About the audio stuff : You and I are probably the only ones on this forum with a serious opinion on that, and you already know mine.

Running IV smoothly on all high and 4xAA no problems at all with my HD6870.
(i5 2500K, AsRock Z68 Pro3-M, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3)

As of the arguments above, a single case can hardly oppse global tests by hardware-sites and experts.
Sure, there can be a single case, but who is that going to help? No one.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/290?vs=317 (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/290?vs=317) (Comparison of 6870 and 285, 280 wasn't listed).
The AMD alternative runs cooler, uses less power and is generally twice as powerful.

As for Link9rly, I'd support reading and asking at AnandTech or similar hardware-site instead of here.
At least there majority of users there have experience and are experts on computer hardware than users here.

Only thing you proved is that you can run IV and that you think you are a know it all

Link the build I posted is very good and you will also get good FPS in games at decent settings

All expected as the GTX 285 is coming up to 4 years old and the 6870 is a little over 1 year old.

But Considering my CPU aint great, RAM aint great, my rig is a better match to the guy I'm comparing my performance in GTA IV.

So please kindly gtfo so me and Aldo can host an intelligent conversation.

Just notifying you two, that the only thing I presented was my own situation - a thing that varies on multiple factors like you said above as well.
Obviously a newer card outperforms an older one, but why are you proving your own sentence false?

We are here to help Link9rly to get the best bang for the buck, as that is always what it is all about.
I don't know about you if you have ever worked and where, but I do know what I've learnt, seen and proven in real life after getting educated
to the job, voluntarily taking my own interests towards the market for several years and building hundreds of custom PC's for a living so far.

So I give my apologies for anyone I may have hurt emotionally like I were, but I am here to help Link9rly.
Unfortunately it seems impossible with today's human kind.

I worded myself incorrectly.

I was stating that the GTX 280 had a better performance in GTA IV than the 6870 while running very similar general hardware. I was wondering why.
