Title: Megaupload closed by F.B.I.
Post by: Reece on January 19, 2012, 10:52:57 pm
Yeah, you read correctly, once of the biggest file sharing websites in the world has been shut down.

What are your thoughts on this?

The announcement came a day after thousands of websites took part in a "blackout" to protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (Pipa).

The US Chamber of Commerce has defended the proposed laws saying that enforcement agencies "lack the tools" to effectively apply existing intellectual property laws to the digital world.

Not for long Hevar if FBI actually manages to get the megaupload people convicted. Then Speedyshare, Rapidshare and every other similar service, even without SOPA.

But my biggest question if in this, why not close down Google in the same time? Even if Google is not standing behind Piracy, their own search engine can be used for piracy.

Title: Re: Megaupload closed by F.B.I.
Post by: Marcell on January 20, 2012, 01:23:18 am
the reason why MU got down is because they didnt force customers in lame way to pay for premium - rapidshare acumulatted millions from premium accounts alone, thus they have enough good lawyers not to go down, no matter what. Megaupload was one of those cool sites, and the fact its called 'mega pirating site' lately is just bullshit, they always removed pirated stuff as long as they realised it's pirated.

fuck the police.

Megaupload deserved it. When you knowingly host copyrighted content and repeatedly ignore DMCA takedown notices, you're violating the law. Just like the police will take down a drug dealer. Sure, he may not be making the drugs himself, but he's still in violation of the law.

The people who owned the website made a stupid choice in living in a country that will extradite you to the US. had they lived in a place like Hong Kong (Where their site is hosted) the US could not touch them. This is why many Chinese torrenting sites and even Pirate Bay cant be touched by the US in this way, because the owners reside in a country that wont extradite you.

Taking down sites gives more of a reason for a Government to do things like this.

If the government hadn't shut down Megaupload at first, they would have never done such thing.

See people like you, is what makes the people bad, Submitting to the government actions, and accepting anything they do is wrong, They are there to work for us, for the society, we pay their salaries. Sure it ain't right to do anything you want, But the freedom of speech is one of the major social conquers the world ever had, and it should not be blocked for Companies own personal interests.

fact: any pirated content from MU was removed as soon as they figured out it was pirated. Maybe not from the time they existed, but from the last few months, yes. You don't expect every uploading site to magically remove pirated shiz in few minutes, do you?

Stop visiting that ip 109.x.x.x of MegaUpload or any mirrors, the site wont be back it self and these are fake cached pages with aim to track your IP or w/e.

As for MegaUpload, Don't spread bullshit unless you know how the things are.
What caused MegaUpload to close was the fact that when a file was reported they only deleted the URL and not the MD5 Hashed File. (Saying this because if someone was trying to upload a file that was already uploaded with MD5 Hash check, it would just generate a new URL to that certain file and not re-upload it), so in-fact only URLs were disabled up-on copyrighted content report, but never the files were delete from the servers, and plus the owners/administrators were sharing copyrighted content between each other via e-mails and they knew about it. If you read battle's post on 2nd page for the official papers, you will see exactly the e-mails recorded.. ;)

Alsa, this isn't permanently right?

No, it's not permanent - the bills have been pulled for revision. They're more than likely to return but with less outrageous provisions. And even if they do, the likelihood they'll pass now after this whole ordeal is very slim.

It says that they are pulling it back for 1 week to make a "better approach".

Where does it say that? Are you referring to this: "... the bills will be pulled and reworked after intense public pushback.  The bills were set to go to vote next week."
