Title: CPU usage VERY high [Please read!]
Post by: Zlatan on March 19, 2012, 01:56:23 pm
Hello,

Recently I've noticed that my CPU usage is very high. This started happening a few days ago. When I start to watch a video on YT, or when I play GTA:SA my CPU usage is very high. Whats wrong with it? I tried everything, I uninstalled programs that I won't be needing, I don't have any viruses, I even disabled my Anti Virus and this is still happening.

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)

Help would be MUCH appreciated.

Thank you!
-Starky. :girl:

Check that your PC is not dusty and check that all of your fans are working properly

It is not dusty, I cleaned it just like 1 week ago. Everything is working properly.

Check the task manager to see what is really causing the high cpu usage.

What OS are you running?
What Internet Browser are you using?
Do you have mods on your GTA SA, such as ENB, SRT3, Car mods, Texture mods?

I don't have many processes. I disabled alot of processes. [Un-needed ones]. The process thats using the most CPU usage, is System Idle process ATM. And why does 'EasyRedict.exe' keep showing up, ._. NVM also, my InternetExplorer.exe I think it was, its crashing about 1 min after I start my PC... Or later one more times.

Settings on my GTA:SA are all on lowest, I even use the old theme, no background [all for performance, I don't care about appearance]. I am running a Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP3. No mods at all, browser is Google Chrome. I use Mozilla Firefox but rarely.

Google Chrome uses a fair bit of system power, especially while running Java/Flash items such as Youtube.
There is the likely cause for your high CPU Usage.

Here is an example of the Memory Usage that Google Chrome is using while I had a single Youtube Video streaming and this Argonath Forum Page open.

System idle is supposed to be showing a high usage especially when well it's idle.

Do a scan for Malware, I'm unsure as to what this "EasyRedict.exe" is.

Doing a malware scan with Anti-Malware Malwarebytes.

When Chrome runs on my PC it's greedy.

When the search/scan is done post the results if you can we'll all have a browse to see what is suspicious if anything.

Download HijackThis, http://www.trendmicro.co.uk/products/free-tools-and-services/ (http://www.trendmicro.co.uk/products/free-tools-and-services/) this may show if anything malicious is causing it. If it doesn't it seems we have eliminated. Viruses, Malware... and the problem may lie elsewhere.

Try switching to another browser?
Also, please give us a full screenshot of the 'processes' tab on Task Manager (Alt-tab)..

Dude, If you're playing SA and if it goes to 90% its normal for a Pentium 4. I remember having a Pentium 4 PC not sure why but its usage showed always above 90% and still it was way faster than my friends dual core computers, however I wan unable to run few games on it due to graphics being only 256MB. Even now when I check, My pc shows usage around 24% but RAM usually shows 50-90%, Don't think thats a problem, as long as you're able to run stuff properly.

This is why I use Firefox, with 1 tab open it sits at 20MB(Custom Settings Tho), *dat ram usage*

Since you have tried everything we have posted and what Matt has said is 100% true
It's time for you to start saving up for a new build

Anyway, I'll contact a tech expert.

Pentium 4 is fairly outdated now, don't get me wrong, it does the job, but in a couple of years maximum, I'd advise upgrading.

Try defragmenting your PC, the system defragmenter should be in;

>Start Menu
>Programs
>Accessories
>System Tools

HOWEVER, I advise downloading defragger from HERE (http://www.piriform.com/defraggler/download), it is a better tool.

Your processor may be working hard, but if all your data is spread all over the disc platter, it's gonna take longer.

Imagine putting together a PC, if you need to find all the components spread over a warehouse, it'll take ages, but if they're all in one spot, everything will be quicker. Defragmenting places everything together in clumps.

Get your facts straight, an illegal / downloaded version of GTA SA could always contain >hidden< files which do not only make players being banned but aswell make your CPU get high.

My copy I downloaded is pirated, and I am running it on 12x AA with a smooth fps, this contradicts your statement.

@OP

Have you tried using the System Restore before the problem arose to your attention?

Have you also tried reinstalling SA:MP and GTA:SA, as well as Google Chrome

With your Google Chrome, check if you don't have any background tabs (Screwdriver, "View Background Tabs") open. Extensions are known to have their own process on your Task Manager list and can create high CPU usage.

You do not understand my post, an pirated version of GTA SA can contain files which not only make the game laggy but aswell get people banned, this is not on ALL illegal versions, but there sure are versions on the internet containing these files.

I'm running a Pentium Duo E2200 (2.20 GHz) in a stock HP a64000f. It's not a gaming machine at all and it runs San Andreas smoothly. No graphics card either. I have multiple applications running at all times like Skype, Chrome, Steam, and Mediamonkey. I don't know what's wrong with your setup. InternetExplorer.exe sounds suspicious as the real application is iexplorer.exe. I would check which services you don't need along with start up items.

You do not understand my post, an pirated version of GTA SA can contain files which not only make the game laggy but aswell get people banned, this is not on ALL illegal versions, but there sure are versions on the internet containing these files.

I see your part of the 10% of people who freak on every file they download. Lets be honest, this is an older game not some new game thus not as much as a target for malicious developers. Not to mention, 99% of the virus scanners will detect hidden files, and code which for your information there is never actually any hidden files in such downloads. What you should be worried about is the files you can see that contain malicious code. Thus your statement is 80% false. Yet it never hurts to just buy the game so you know the source is trusted and safe.

In addition, no hidden files can get you banned in GTA:SA. The files you see that are modded may get you banned but again these hidden files doesn't exist.

InternetExplorer.exe sounds suspicious as the real application is iexplorer.exe.
That file is commonly a Trojan (Virus)

Google Chrome's original advertisement contained the fact it used so much less processes than any other browser, they did this by showing only one of the two processes used with each tab. While in reality it uses just the same or more in some cases as each tab normally uses 2 processes ranging from 20k to 40k ram and some sites like Facebook, or Pandora may use 1% CPU. I'm running on a laptop and I always have MSN open, Skype, Firefox with 10 or more tabs, and various other crap open and everything seems to run just fine. Its not a gaming laptop either.

How long has it been since the PC has been reformatted? As in a fresh install? Anything more than a year it might not hurt to backup your important photos, files and other documents and give her a clean start. Also, I know I have this problem after only a few months.

Another thing is, do you leave your computer running over an extended period of time? Such as in excess of 24 hours or more. Some problems may contain memory leaks which would cause such issues. I have this problem often, I restart my computer once a week at the most.

Hope it helps :)

Incorrect, my whole post contains personal experience with this problem, which the problem was infact confirmed by an Argonath RPG administrator. This illegal version of GTA SA contained an file which did set my CPU to 100% directly when starting up, and it got simply fixed by buying an legal version.

Then you have bad luck.

Nothing I have downloaded illegally has contained viruses/files that got me banned or have affected my computer, because they are the Vanilla versions.

This has also been fixed, so the topic can be locked now if required to prevent further argument/discussion about piracy.

Please do not recommend Hijackthis or any such tools to anybody, unless supervised by a expert.
Such tools often give false positives, and are given a flexible structure to get less hindrances from malware, hence they can very well do more harm than good in unsupervised hands.

As for your computer starky, optimize it.
Defragment is, clean it via ccleaner, download avast and give it a good scan, update your drivers and such.

HijackThis is a good program though...

Good, but dangerous and outdated.
Modern malware have found ways to trick hijackthis, and hijackthis often gives false positives as high as deleting system32 itself(yes i saw this happen)

Malware can find there ways around anything you assume is safe. As for potential false positives, this is why you check thoroughly.
