Title: [Solved - Requesting Topic Locked] Windows Explorer has stopped working!
Post by: Natalya on April 02, 2012, 02:26:07 pm
I think the time has come to reinstall Windows. However, I wanted to give it a try by finding an alternative, so I am now desperately seeking help since this has been killing me for the past weeks.
Problem description: Every time I double click on My Computer, Documents, or any folder at all it goes "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and few seconds later it goes "Windows Explorer is restarting". I can't even browse through folders before getting these messages, and it is killing me since there is no "Find a solution" option.
Just for the record, there has always been Windows 7 installed on this PC, and I have never reinstalled Windows (yet).
Really hope somebody out there could give it a try to find a solution.
Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
-Natalya_Gambetti

Recently had any viruses and for that matter have you done a virus scan? If you can eliminate viruses from the equation you can then move on to repairing the files via the installation disc or if you have a repair partition make use that.

I have a feeling that it is a virus causing this. I have, however, had NOD32 Antivirus 5 installed on this PC from the day I got it. So I don't really know how to take viruses out of the equation, since no Antivirus really scans your PC and finds anything at all.

I think your best bet would be to make another partition on your hard drive, back your things on to it and reinstall Windows. If it is a virus, you don't really know how many others that could be infecting your computer.

Hmm... Tried to create a new User Account on the PC; Issue remained and nothing changed.
I'd prefer to just reinstall Windows instead of creating a new partition though. But let's wait and see some other ideas for now :)

Creating another partition and reinstalling Windows might not solve problem, if virus is located in user files.

Try Windows System Files Checker, http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/system_file_checker.mspx?mfr=true (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/system_file_checker.mspx?mfr=true)

OMG you are simply a genius! Did all sfc [/scannow] [/scanonce] [/scanboot] [/revert] [/purgecache] and the stupid messages are gone! Well, atleast for now! I'd like to wait two days or so, if it remains like this, you deserve the biggest prize ever! :hurray:

EDIT: Oh damn. After I posted this, I went on "Documents" and the same old messages came back alive from their grave :(

lol'd, Do you have a windows installation disc? If yes, Simply repair the windows files, do not re install, but pick update/re install without deleting data instead. Sometimes, It cant be virus but some excessive tweaking done, I end up doing that too sometimes, I have my start menu, icons, login page all modded.  ;)

Tried that last night, and it made no change at all.
I am going to do a full recovery today. I will move all my files (Less than 1GB actually) to another partition. The recovery itself might do the job, but let's see what happens when I move the files back.

Try a system restore to a point before this started happening.

Surprising how bad ASUS are at creating a recovery. I did the recovery TWICE, and every single time Windows booted up, it restarted within 10 seconds. Therefore, I formatted and re-installed Windows from normal Windows 7 discs and everything seems to be working fine now.
So, question of the day; I have installed AVG Antivirus, was that a bad choice? :)

Obviously it wasn't a bad choice since it's free.

Is not a bad choice, I have used AVG and Avast!, both work fine.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has given a hand at finding a solution, those on the forum, and those on MSN. Thank to each and every one of you; I can now request this topic to be locked with a smile :).
