Fast food giant Kentucky Fried Chicken was Friday ordered to pay Aus$8 million (US$8.3 million) to an Australian girl who suffered severe brain damage and was paralysed after eating a chicken wrap.
Monika Samaan was seven when she suffered salmonella encephalopathy -- a brain injury linked to food poisoning that also left her with a blood infection and septic shock -- in October 2005.
Other family members also fell ill and they claimed Samaan's injuries, which include severe cognitive, motor and speech impairment and spastic quadriplegia, were caused by a "Twister" wrap containing chicken and salad from a Sydney KFC outlet.
The New South Wales Supreme Court ruled in the family's favour a week ago and on Friday ordered KFC to pay the girl Aus$8 million in damages plus legal costs.
In a statement, the family's lawyer George Vlahakis said they were relieved the battle was over.
"Monika's severe brain damage and severe disability has already exhausted the very limited resources of the family," he said.
"Monika is now a big girl and they are finding it increasingly difficult to lift her and to look after her basic needs as well as look after Monika's younger siblings.
"The compensation ordered is very much needed. KFC have to date been determined that Monika does not receive a cent."
Last week KFC said it believed the evidence showed KFC did not cause the tragedy and indicated it will appeal the decision but is yet to do so.
"We feel deeply for Monika and the Samaan family however we also have a responsibility to defend KFC's reputation as a provider of safe, high quality food," KFC Australia's chief corporate affairs officer Sally Glover said.
During the trial, Justice Stephen Rothman said the chicken became contaminated "because of the failure of one or more employees of KFC" to follow proper preparation rules, which he described as "negligent".

This is what happens when even one employee does not wash his hands before handling your food, for all you know he could have masturbated just before doing so; pubic hair in fast food is already a statistic.

Thing went bad? Throwing it out is a loss. Lets sell this shit.
Although they didnt expect something as severe as this, they probably thought the worst case scenario would be minor food poisoning, all worth it for the few bucks they save, which all little by little adds the manager to the stats at higher, which does increase his chances of promotions and raise by about one in a million.

Nah but seriously scary shit and I feel sorry for the girl. Hard to believe that food could do this to human but guess everything is possible. Tho that money..sure usefull but how about those who were guilty of this tradegy..Someone need to be FIRED!..Atleast..if it was clear ignoring protocol..then they should pay for it somehow.

Say what you want about the way of breeding and killing the chickens, but the cruelty/abuse part looks completely staged to gather support for PETA's case. I wouldn't put it behind them to throw animals against the walls and stomp on them to frighten/shock people into supporting their cause.
And the ending part is "boo hoo chickens can form friends, they are people". No, they're poultry and they taste good.

If I found out for a fact this was real I'de burn my local KFC down, thats just cruel as f**k the way the do that, the chickens should get as much of a life as anyone else before they are taking to KFC shithole factorys.

I'm not a little tree hugger, but I believe everything that is born should have the right to live, the way those chickens are treated is just cruel and inhumane. If your going to slaughter them for food atleast give them some respect, if there was a species that ate humans, would you like to be thrown around, steamed alive, have your legs broken and hung on a rack still alive and stood on for fun by farmers?
