Title: Massive landslide destroys half of Interstate 75 in East Tennessee
Post by: Matthew_Green on May 27, 2012, 12:40:12 am
Around the first week of May, a landslide occured 10 miles from my house on Interstate 75 in Campbell County, Tennessee. Around Milemarker 143, both Southbound lanes of I-75 gave out and fell victim to a landslide after 50 years of useage and erosion. Keep in mind that my region, East Tennessee, is made entirely out of dormant fault lines, caves, and caverns. Thankfully at the time of the landslide, no cars or semis were on that stretch of highway.

All Southbound traffic was diverted to Route 25W, aka the Main Road in my county, to I-75 exit 134. Leading to both a 20 mile detour, and massive traffic headaches for locals like me. While at the same time, TDOT decided to keep all Northbound lanes of I-75 open to traffic.

So 3 weeks later, the Left Shoulder of I-75 North got transformed into a crossover lane for 1-lane of Southbound traffic. That opened up to traffic a few days ago on the 20th. Thus relieving local residents, like me, from the detour traffic; but we still have to deal with tourist traffic...

Here's some pictures showing the extent of the landslide damage:
