A massive blackout hit northern and eastern India on Tuesday afternoon, leaving 600 million people without electricity in one of the world's most widespread power failures.

no idea, didn't experience it. :o

India has an installed capacity of more than 170,000 megawatts, up from a mere 1,362 megawatts at the time of Independence in 1947.
Yep, the country just got f**ked up HARD, i already predicted this a year ago though.. There will probably be a power crisis in the country for atleast 15-25 years to come, cause not only is the technology very low, the politicians are very corrupt(oh wait, make that 30-40 years then).
If anything this is just minor winds before the storm, the energy consumption in the country has been growing at about 7 percent per annum which is very high, it will easily over-capacitate systems like this. Let alone all the sources of power available provide low amounts, and the country's economy + politicans reduce the chances of high tech power sources to less than a speck. Nuclear power is being considered, but most of the country including me are against me, mainly because we know that the politicians wont really take good care of these plants...

600 million.. wow.

Total Population (As per 2011 census):1,210,193,422 :rules: :rules:

Stop the moaning.
That's half of the population...
28% of the population was affected, It was northern part mostly and not eastern. 6 states, and 1 national capital territory(Delhi, where I live.)
I have to say, it was fun, nothing worked, neither traffic lights, nor atms, or gas stations. Trains, metros. Fun!
Tho what I experienced from this is, people still have brain and common sense, the same people who would usually cause accidents, jump lights, kill people were following the rules while the traffic lights were off, people were waiting for others to pass after every few moments, on the points where there were no traffic policemen to manage the traffic. It was nice to see.

Well, I live in the area where the blackout occurred, and blaming everything on politicians, is just not right. Most of us lately been blaming politicians even if the cow doesn't give milk. Lately, the Indian mentality has been like that. We must not forget, after all, We're the ones who pick them.
It was simply a failure in the grid, due to one of the states taking much more power than they were supposed to.

mhm...do tell me more about your research over this topic for several months that clearly states that the power usage is under 170k MV when all the analytics done by the biggest statisticians in the world claiming that it is over 170kMV is wrong, oh and please apply for stanford on your way there..thank you.
Also for the mature part of your previous post, such behavious is already defined by psychology, and thats whats supposed to happen :) Thats part of your brain's attempt to keep the civilization sane.

I just heard that India is about to send an exploration mission to Mars. No offense but your politicians must be really..unappropriate is the best word I could figure while maintaining language.
Instead of spending highly needed money elsewhere, on health, education, agriculture and production, they choose to spend it in a way that there is no help for the citizens..when will the politians learn?

And here in Pakistan there are cities where electricity is provided only for less than 12 hours.

Yes, the thing about the mars mission is true.
But a thing which dominates India, is the money, You're lucky this hasn't hit Europe or western part of the world yet. India might be the fourth largest economy in the world, and the second largest rising economy after China. Yet, we believe, everything has a price. A man, at good post won't sell for $1, wouldn't sell for $100, maybe sell for $1000, might sell for $10000, but he'll surely sell for $100000, and he'd be at your feet for $100000, in fact he'd clean them with his tongue if you want. Everyone and everything has a price, do remember that.
Now, the facts, the latest project in India was , ''Yamuna Expressway'' A simple fly over, where cars would travel at speed higher of 100/KMH, and reach from Noida, to a major city, Agra (where the famous Taj Mahal is located) in just two hours, whereas the journey used to be about 6 hours before, total cost of it? $174,191,757 and 46 cents, to be exact.
Now if you look at it yourself, there's a margin for everything, only 30 percent of the money actually goes into such projects over here, at least 40 percent is eaten up by the politicians, engineers and the rest is used in just planning done on papers.
The thing is, when you get easy money, and even loads of it, who'd be such a huge idiot to not take it?
Apart from the corruption, I believe the black out has nothing to do with the politicians, I mean they won't stick to the electric poles and sit by the damn power grid all day, its a massive power grid, which provides power to the entire country, and the power was re instated within 6 hours, which is a huge success in my view. Anyhow, the Power minister was changed the very next day of that happening.

the country with largest economy where you still smell piss and shit in every alley you go into, with people trying to mask it by lighting incense sticks which create even worse odor than both
not trying to insult it though, i just know since my father was there on his mount everest expedition

Incense sticks are used for spiritual purposes, we use Air fresheners to get rid of the smell. :devroll:
But again, I'm from the metro part, I haven't seen much of the dirt yet. but I can say from my own experience, its the same in most countries, and even worse in some.
-
No offense but their only and every politician must be Shah Rukh Khan. He's the man for everything!
-
lol
well I was in Egypt recently, and it's horrible.

Our IT minister doesnt know how to operate a computer...Our finance minister sent us into a financial disaster then became the president...Indian government is the most corrupt in the world...
We have videos of politicians blackmailing reporters, and those reporters even died weeks after putting those videos online, anything done about it? Nope.avi
We got bigass riots in one of the states between several hundred thousand men, they deployed 1k soldiers with pistols.
Trust me, if you were to come down here it would look like nothing else than an urban shithole, most of the country is in rural areas where power is only available for 1-2 hours a week..
