I've been using Avast for a long time, never had a problem with it. It gets the job done.

I used Avast for a month or two, I absolutely hated it. I've been using Avira AntiVir for as long as I can remember. Very good IMO.

You couldn't figure out how to turn the notifications off, could you?
I lol in your face.

ESET Smart Security 5. It's not free, but it's had the best results for me.

And I felt it was using too much resources, yeah. I was also forced to use it. I was used to Avira, so I didn't see a need to change it.

Toxic, my friend studying informatics recommended me NOD32 too. I'm bit confused since many guys here recommended Avast, by the way I'm using Windows XP.

Of course Microsoft would be against use of any program besides their own.

Microsoft security essential or norton are best

Please tell me this is a joke.

Norton is amazing, yet firewall settings can be tricky at first. Better than MSE.

McAfee isn't free, sucks. It has poor update quality and uses excessive amount of processes. Equal to MSE.

AVG is fairly well. Free Version + trial of premium (1 month). Very customizable. Better than MSE.

KasperSpy, used once for about a week. No problems or complaints, a bit disappointed in the update freqency but again was only a week. Rated higher that MSE (can't be sure).

Bitdefender, as above hardly used can't really give feedback.

Avast, #1 rated free (based on a few sources). Amazing program, no complaints, very adaptable and easy to use. Better than MSE.

SpyBot S&D, worse than MSE, not recommended.

MalwareBytes is a good tool, I will admit this.
MSE(Microsoft Security Essentials) is utterly useless. Sure its a virus scanner, but its lack of frequency in updates, lack of adaptability, customization and over all user-friendly system is what kills it. I personally have tested this on a virtual environment to see what viruses I can download and get passed it (as I do with everyone AV I've used for extended periods of time) and it was quite depressing the results. Common Trojans and backdoors went undetected with only minor "masking" on them. Needless to say, this will never be on my system.

Luckily, I've been on my Linux boot and haven't had any worrying about which anti-virus to use for it, as it isn't required.

Your best bet would be Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, as long as your windows copy is legit and valid. Who can defend Microsofts products better than the actual microsoft? I have it and so far it detects any virus and removes it instantly.

FREE Antivirus... FREE. I highly recommend Microsoft Security Essentials because it's officially one of the best anti-virus freeware out there. All what Tedd said is wrong and I'm pretty sure the trojans and backdoors he talked about were not detected because he uses more than one real-time protector.

Both have a low false-positive rate. Great on resources consumption, and user-interfaces are friendly.

One of the major differences is NOD32 has a built-in firewall, while Avast (Free) does not.
The ProAnti Virus or Internet Security premium versions of Avast do provide this.
However, NOD32 isn't free as Boozman stated, and costs around 60 USD (47€/37£) per year.

No.

Last night my sister gave my her laptop to fix. Had 3 viruses on it. Guess what AV... MSE.

I did a MSE scan, found a few "tracking cookies" on her computer. Didn't find the viruses. Removed MSE, installed avast. Ran a scan. Found Viruses. Gone

I copied the infected files to a USB drive, plugged into my PC. My AVG detected them straight away.

Results speak for themselves.
