This is more of a question than anything else and its plain ol' simple.. I've noticed its taboo to given hint at other servers on Argonath which to be honest confuses me. Why you might ask, well its because this is a pretty successful community with a lot of regular players. So why is it such bad thing to mention a server, I could understand purposeful advertising of course but I'm talking about general discussion. Before you reply to this please remember I'm looking for a smart answer not some fuckwit smashing his keyboard.

Mentioning a server and advertising a server are two completely different things.
-
I believe it is allowed to mention another server, but not go overboard like "OMG *insertservernamehere* IS SOOO UCH BETTER tHAN ARGO!!!11eleven!!!one111!!"
-
Usually, as long as you briefly say "this other server", and don't mention it by name or identifying info, you're fine. Just try to keep it to a minimum so you don't end up discussing it and comparing it to Argo or seem like you're recruiting the person you're discussing it with.
For example, sometimes people discuss the history of Argo, and briefly mention the community the original founding members originated from, and how it led to the split and Argo's creation, but they don't sit there advertising or discussing it specifically. :)

You have high and optimistic expectations.
Quite simply if you are advertising as in directly persuading or requesting a player join another server in which Argoanth has a similar server of, then yes this isn't allowed. However, if you are mentioning another server that is unrelated, I.E a BF3, MW3, {insert other games here} then there is nothing wrong. The problem occurs is when a person tries to take a member from Argonath to another server in which directly is a 'competitor' of Argonath.

There are at least 100 well-populated servers in SA:MP, and countless other communities.
Yet people seem to want to mention only one specific other server.
That can be because:
1. it is the only other server worth playing
2. A bunch of Argonath banned rejects is constantly attempting to undermine us by spreading bullshit and recruiting people there.
In case of it being nr 2, we take the safe option.

I used to talk about that other server...Alot. But then I got banned and had the time to think about it. Most of my Argonath friends that went there usually go there to just "Try it out" but they end up there and continue talking bullshit about Argonath, telling me how this other one is better. Well you know what? It really isn't. They might offer better Roleplay for others, scripts and other stuff but...They don't have Argonath's great community, they don't have the tolerance to new players, they don't have the spirit. I've played on other places but always came back to Argonath. Why? Because no other server can even come close to the ARPG experience. I see no point in advertising because it only shows how pathetic the other server is in the urge to get new players. Well tell you what, better have around 100 people from Argonath that I can have fun with and actually enjoy it, than having 400 or more that are a braindead army relaying on scripts and strict rules to Roleplay. TLDR: Why discuss other server when you can get bored of them? Stay on Argonath and keep your own opinion, because when you go there, you go brainwashed and forget your roots - Argonath Role Playing Game.

Thank you to those that have replied so far I've got the kind of answer I was looking for..

I remember this one time when Flaken simply bashed his keyboard and typed a random, gibberish word, it came out "g<name-of-other-RP-server>".
He literally got instabanned for advertising other servers. Ironically nobody saw that gibberish word as advertising until Flaken actually got banned.
I do believe certain admins are a tad bit hard on this rule, yes.
-
"I played on another RP server earlier, it was freaking awesome!" is a statement. - Discussion / a statement.
"I played on <insert servername here> earlier, I enjoyed it! Come join me - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxx[/i] - Advertising.
Personally I do not like players to discuss other communites in the game. I take it as you are unhappy and doesn't like Argonath and the SA:MP server. If you wish to speak about other servers, do it on MSN / skype / phone or anything else that isn't connected to Argonath.

I could understand if it was purely here's the IP come and play this however its usually (in my case) discussion of stunting servers which allow vehicle spawning etc. One more thing though, how is provoking an advertisement/comment of another server dealt with? For example:
Player: Anyone know any good stunting servers?
Other bloke: Yeah try blah blah, its got a few decent commands

Generally that'd be considered recruiting still, since Argo has a stunt server. I'd assume any GTA MP server, or MP of any game Argo hosts, would be treated as advertising. If it's for a game that isn't hosted by Argo or Paruni, then most admins probably won't care, but it's still down to how they feel about it.

The whole "advertising" punishment should be eased up abit, because like it happened a few weeks ago, I had to link an admin which wanted proof of the Hells Angels threatening a certain community with their lawyer, noone believed me and the only way was to send a link to that community's forum. This was done as the admin wanted proof. Is this considered advertising by the way?

If you're using the community's name, yes. If not, then no...although I wouldn't recommend leaking information about incidents like that to the public. :P

There is a reason for this - people try to find newer and newer ways to bend each and every rule to the point where they get effectively broken. Whether flaken wanted to break the rule and really advertise - I don't know. It would depend on the facts and circumstances of the case. But as a general rule, mentioning other servers is disallowed.
Think about it this way - if you were to mention Argonath in other communities, do you think it would be taken lightly?

It's not unrealistic for someone to get banned from all that community's servers. Probably from the forums too.
Ironic, how some of the people who say that we should be like other communities do not really know what it is like there.
-
Its a mixed topic to be honest, some don't give a shit for discussion of other servers or asking who's from where on the other hand you'll get servers that will consider it taboo like Argonath
-
I think it depends on the admin. Some might not care that you didn't really talk about another server, while others will see it as advertising. Back when I was a mod, admins used to talk about a specific server even using it's name but no one cared.

Depends, some servers differ on policies. Some would treat it harshly, lightly, or not botther at all.
