Title: Hurricane Sandy: 'Super storm' to hit US
Post by: Devin on October 28, 2012, 12:45:18 pm
Miami - Hurricane Sandy, a late-season Atlantic cyclone that threatens to be one of the worst storms to hit the US Northeast in decades, slogged slowly northward early on Saturday after killing at least 41 people in the Caribbean.

Forecasters said wind damage, widespread and extended power outages and coastal and inland flooding were anticipated across a broad swath of the densely populated US East Coast when Sandy comes ashore early next week.

"We're expecting a large, large storm. The circulation of this storm as it approaches the coast could cover about the eastern third of the United States," said Louis Uccellini, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Centers for Environmental Prediction.

He stopped short of calling Sandy possibly the worst storm to hit the US Northeast in 100 years, as some weather watchers were doing, but said Sandy was shaping up to go down as a storm of "historic" proportions.

Con... Congratulations? School was closed for me too, both Monday and Tuesday, but I don't think this is an issue that you should be celebrating. I'm not quite sure about New York, but Governor Christie has placed a 'State of Emergency' alert in effect.

I live in Ohio, southern at that. Weather stations (local and some national one) predict snow, up to 14-16 inches, all from this and a Cold Front we're experiencing. Quite ironic.

Tropical storm-force winds extending out to over 500 miles from the center - holy shit.

Good luck to all who are going to be hit by this...

Been watching CNN all day long, I must say that they're in love with the term "The Perfect Storm" it seems, but the tides have risen insanely along the day, even though the tide should be going back, it's still raising.. the coastline is going to get rather wrecked if it keeps this up.

Why do you insist on typing like this?

Anyway, it seems that the storm's the worst around the Washington area. Thankfully, my town's only been experiencing some rain and mid-to-heavy wind; I can't say the same for the folks over in the Jersey shore area, though.

Nearly all of Britains houses are made of brick, yet you Americans insist on wooden houses in tornado and hurricane zones, if you had brick houses all you'd lose is some roof tiles and windows, would be much less expensive! Duh..

True, but it is a large system producing very strong surges, combined with another winter system and a full moon with high tides.

And luckily for me, I live in a coastal community and I'm about 0.4 miles (0.64km) north of a mandatory evacuation zone.

Power outages are already occurring, and there was a brownout some minutes ago, yet the center of the storm is still supposed to get closer. About two blocks away from my house, a large tree already fell onto a house.

Sandy Hurricane: Dam breaks in New Jersey
Jersey: A dam has broken in United States’ New Jersey state fearing trapping thousands of people, reports rescue services.

According to an eye witness “There’s a dam break in New Jersey. Then a fire is raging in Queens. Transformer explosion in Lower Manhattan.”

“A dam has just broke in New Jersey and rescue operation is underway,” officials say and added that 20,000 people might be affected.

New Jersey is a state in the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic regions of US bordering also with New York, the most affected state.

Authorities are conducting rescues from homes in three New Jersey towns after a dam break, CNN said.

After the Dam Break, the power lines and Nuclear Power Plant have also been put on Alert in New Jersey.

It was soooooo shitty. :/

Wind took down some power lines near where I live, luckily we live in a business district of town so they fixed it up after some time and had the power back, took another 5 to fix internet tho, trees are down around as well, trees and branches everywhere. I see now looking at the news we got it pretty easy seeing that some have lost their lives, my thoughts go out to their families.

And its still not over, wind is still kicking and rain is off and on in heavy amounts. :/

Quote
The massive storm that started out as Hurricane Sandy slammed into the East Coast and morphed into a huge and problematic system affecting millions of people. Here's a snapshot of what is happening or expected, state by state.

Carolinas
The US Coast Guard rescued 14 members of a crew forced to abandon a tall ship off the North Carolina coast. One of the crew members was found hours later and was in critical condition at a hospital Monday night, but the ship's captain was still missing. The HMS Bounty was originally built for the 1962 film "Mutiny on the Bounty" starring Marlon Brando and has been featured in other films, including one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. Power outages: 5,639.

Connecticut
The University of Connecticut is closing on Tuesday, joining a hundreds of other schools and school systems across the state. The closure includes UConn's law school and the UConn Health Center, though the John Dempsey Hospital will remain open during the storm. Two people have died in storm related accidents. State police said a person died after being hit by a falling tree and the Easton Fire Department said a firefighter was fatally injured when a tree fell on his truck. Power outages: 615,000.

Delaware
Dover Air Force Base has relocated some aircraft in anticipation of the storm, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has requested that the base be used as a staging area for support and supplies. Some residents of low-lying areas of the base have been ordered to evacuate. Power outages: 32,000.

Illinois
The powerful storm is expected to extend as far as Chicago, where the National Weather Service already has issued high wind warnings and a lakeshore flood warning for Tuesday and Wednesday. City officials said Lake Shore Drive, along Lake Michigan, is expected to remain open. But they urged motorists to proceed carefully. The Chicago Transit Authority said it will reroute buses if necessary.

Kentucky
Sandy is expected to bring snow to far southeastern Kentucky. A winter storm warning is in effect in Harlan, Letcher and Pike counties through Wednesday morning. Forecasters say snow could accumulate from 4 to 10 inches in high elevations and 1 to 3 inches in lower elevations.

Maine
Virtually all Maine public schools opened Monday but some were closing early before the heaviest rain and wind from Hurricane Sandy. State officials say the biggest concern is wind, which is expected to cause widespread power outages. The state's utilities say they have crews poised to deal with expected power outages, including some from Canada. Power outages: 80,000.

Maryland
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake says vehicular travel is banned on city roads beginning at 6 p.m. Monday. The restrictions to do not apply to uniformed personnel, hospital employees or other medical providers. Governor Martin O'Malley earlier Monday closed the Bay Bridge.

Massachusetts
Voluntary evacuation recommendations have been issued in Scituate, Lynn, New Bedford and Plum Island. The recommendations are for just certain sections of the communities that could be affected by flooding as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Mandatory evacuations were ordered in sections of Dartmouth and Fall River. Power outages: 400,000.

Michigan
Michigan utilities say high winds could cause power outages in the state and they're keeping an eye on the weather to respond to power problems. DTE Energy Co said gusts of 50 mph on Monday evening and Tuesday could affect some it its 2.1 million customers. Power outages: 23,000.

New Hampshire
Governor John Lynch has urged all drivers to be off the roads by 3 p.m. as Hurricane Sandy approaches. Lynch declared a state of emergency and directed that non-essential state workers be released from work Monday afternoon. He urged employers to consider releasing workers early. The governor has put 100 New Hampshire Guard soldiers on active duty. At least 13 shelters have been opened. Power outages: 120,000.

New Jersey
All roads into and out of Ocean City are closed due to flooding that has cut off the popular Jersey shore resort community. Former Hurricane Sandy already had flooded most of Atlantic City, sweeping away an old section of the city's famed boardwalk. Officials said two people were killed when a tree landed on their vehicle. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Newark Liberty airport had been shut down until further notice. The airport had technically been open throughout the day although flights were not coming or going. Power outages: 1.7 million.

New York
Much of New York was plunged into darkness Monday from the superstorm and utilities that deliberately darkened downtown Manhattan to prevent storm damage. Water flooded into two major commuter tunnels and onto some subway tracks at stations in the city. Governor Andrew Cuomo's office said at least five people have died in New York state because of the storm. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Power said airports in metropolitan New York City have been closed until further notice due to flooding. Power outages: 1,130,000.

Ohio
Residents of low-lying areas and along Lake Erie were told to watch for flooding; utilities are anticipating high winds that could blow down trees and poles. Snow is forecast in some areas. Power outages: 22,000.

Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said Monday that more than 200 bridges and roads were closed because of downed trees, power lines and flooding, most of it in southeastern Pennsylvania. Officials from the state transit agency and the Pennsylvania Turnpike instituted speed restrictions over concerns about high winds and ordered certain vehicles, including empty trucks and motorcycles, off some highways. Three people have died in storm-related incidents, including an 8-year-old boy who was killed when a tree limb fell on him. Power outages: more than 1 million.

Rhode Island
Officials are concerned about wind driving water north up Narragansett Bay, which could create flooding in low-lying areas of the upper bay, including Providence, Warwick and Cranston. Power outages: 110,000.

Tennessee
Snow is expected in higher elevations, where a freeze warning has been issued. High winds are expected in many areas.

Vermont
Governor Peter Shumlin declared a state of emergency to provide access to National Guard troops in a state still recovering from the devastating effects of the remnants of Hurricane Irene. Culverts and storm drainage basins in some spots have been cleared of debris. Power outages: 14,470.

Virginia
Thousands in Virginia are without power as former Hurricane Sandy began moving away from the state. There are about 100,000 people without electricity in northern Virginia. Utilities have brought in additional crews to assist with restoration efforts. Power outages: 123,460.

Washington, DC
Taxis that originate in Washington are authorized to add an emergency flat rate of $15 per trip because of Hurricane Sandy, starting Monday. The price is supposed to expire at noon Tuesday, but can be extended if considered necessary. The capital area's transit system shut down rail service for the first time since 2003. Power outages: 5,500.

West Virginia
Officials said a woman was killed in a storm-related traffic accident. A spokeswoman for Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said about 5 inches of snow had fallen in the area of Tucker County where the crash occurred, making road conditions treacherous. Tomblin declared a state of emergency for the state on Monday. West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Jimmy Gianato said conditions are expected to be at their worst overnight and early Tuesday before the storm moves on. Power outages: 49,000.

Wisconsin
The Village of Pleasant Prairie along Lake Michigan near the Illinois border has advised residents in about 265 homes to voluntarily evacuate on Tuesday morning because of the possibility of dangerously high waves and flooding. Lori Getter of the Wisconsin Division of Emergency Management said waves of 14-18 feet are forecast for Lake Michigan.

@Reece: LOL! That's my hometown of VA Beach-Norfolk, VA for you.

@Devin: What you said at the bottom about snow in Tennessee.......It is currently snowing at my house in Jacksboro,TN. We're part of Campbell County, along the I-75 corridor, and about 30 miles north from Knoxville, TN. So far, my house has got about an inch of snow. Sadly, I still have to go to college class tonight  :(   At least I'm driving my new truck, a $90,000 2011 Ford F-350. Don't worry, it has train horns, snow chains, snow plow, and 4-wheel drive :)

Nearly all of Britains houses are made of brick, yet you Americans insist on wooden houses in tornado and hurricane zones, if you had brick houses all you'd lose is some roof tiles and windows, would be much less expensive! Duh..
After 12 years of living in the US, I still don't know why they do that...

The reason why they make wooden houses is that in severe storms, if a house collapses, there are far greater chances of survival in a wooden house than a house made of brick or cement.

We also have Brick/Cement houses made in Pakistan. Slight earthquake, building collapses, people die. Wooden houses are more flexible, and can sustain more vibrations in earthquake as well. And like I said, greater survival in one.

Sandy's Aftermath: The superstorm upsets the lives of millions of people and creates damages in the billions of dollars

Quote
Millions of people along the East Coast, and as far inland as Michigan, are feeling the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Now that the 60 mile per hour winds and heavy rains have ended, officials and citizens are surveying damage that is worse than anyone had imagined.

"It is beyond anything I thought I'd ever see," said New Jersey governor Chris Christie. "It is a devastating sight right now." New Jersey is among the states hit the hardest by Hurricane Sandy.

Monstrous surges of water and powerful, whipping winds uprooted trees, took down power lines, and flooded homes. Many of New York City's subway tunnels are underwater, and train tracks and roads are torn up in several states. Sandy may cost $60 billion in property damage and lost business across the nation, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in the history of the United States.

A Devastating Storm

Sandy was a Category 1 hurricane with winds near 90 miles per hour. Tropical storm-force winds extended almost 500 miles from its center. The storm first hit the Caribbean and was blamed for 65 deaths there before making its way north along the East Coast. A high-pressure ridge of air around Greenland blocked the hurricane from going out to sea as storms usually do. Instead, the storm shifted west toward land.

The eye, or center, of the hurricane hit land late Monday near the southern coast of New Jersey. It collided with a wintry storm from the west and cold air coming down from the Arctic. Brutal winds and close to a foot of rain were felt across hundreds of miles. Coastal areas, including parts of New York City and Long Island, experienced huge surges of seawater, made worse by high tides and a full moon. "This is the worst-case scenario," said Louis Uccellini, Environmental Prediction Chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Sandy's Destructive Trail

Sandy has left about 8.3 million people in 17 states without power, extending as far west as Michigan. The death toll has reached 127, 59 of the reported deaths in the United States. Utility crews from as far away as Texas are heading to help restore electricity to homes and businesses in stricken states.

In New Jersey, where the storm came ashore, the hurricane cut off the state's barrier islands and wrecked beach boardwalks up and down the coast. Huge swells swept over towns, flooding homes and submerging streets. In some places, water rose five feet in just 45 minutes. As water levels grew, some residents became trapped inside their homes. Authorities struggled with airboats and rafts to rescue about 800 people. As the storm reached the Midwest, Chicago

Officials warned residents to stay clear of Lake Michigan's shore. Ferocious winds of up to 65 miles per hour could create waves exceeding 24 feet there. For parts of West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland, Sandy brought blizzard conditions. More than two feet of snow is expected to accumulate in some places, cutting off electricity and closing dozens of roads. Drifts four feet deep are building in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Tennessee-North Carolina border.

Whether from snow, floodwaters, fire, or rain, Americans can agree the fury of Sandy has been the weather event of a lifetime. "Nature," said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, "is an awful lot more powerful than we are." The superstorm has left a wave of heartache and destruction in its wake. As people slowly try to put the pieces back together and resume their normal lives, it is becoming clear this mess will take a long time to clean up.

Day 4(?) without power. Jersey shore was obviously hit the hardest, with houses disconnected from their foundations, some in the ocean, and even on the middle of a highway. Locally speaking, some areas have been restored power; a couple streets down from my house has several power lines down on the ground, and another street's pole was disconnected in half. Many trees have been ripped out of their roots, and most of the traffic lights aren't functional.

It's pretty crazy.

A natural disaster occurs.. it's normal, it's the nature of our world. We wouldn't be if movement hadn't existed.

It's obviously a shame that such a storm hit important centers full of people, houses etc.. but we never think about prevention.

Many of the houses we see destroyed and transported by the water are made with cheap and not resistant materials (as widespread in the US). This is why everytime a disaster happens. Why don't they build water/wind-proof houses or add protections to the cities at risk of hurricane? The most stupid thing I see is everytime those weak houses being re-built, everytime. How can't we expect another disaster?

Here in the Philippines, storms and floods like this are a more frequent occurrence. However, our infrastructure (despite its economic poverty) is better designed to stand the impact of storms, unlike the cheap building materials common on the east coast.

Unfortunately, this is also what happens when greedy politicians veto millions in storm prevention that could have saved more lives.

As for those who tried to turn this topic into their personal quarrel playground, they can expect bigger consequences if they continue. Unnecessary posts removed.

It really is incredible how much terror power outages can cause. Without power, nearly everyone (at least in my town) lost their minds. They needed to get their hands on something electronic; everyone needed to charge their phones, their iPods, and laptops. There's a highway rest stop a few blocks away from my house. When I went there to charge my family's phones, there was a group of people in the corner, playing with an Xbox360 plugged in to the television owned by the rest stop. I guess this really shows how much electricity really means to all of us.

On another note, Governor Christie has placed a gasoline ration plan, where cars with plates with the last numerical value being odd can only fill their tanks up on 'odd' days, and even values on 'even' days. However, even with this rule, the lines at gas stations are incredible long. PSE&G, our electrical company, stated that the power should be restored in my township some time before Monday, November 5th. I hope things really settle down by then.

From what I'm hearing, another storm is hitting the New York/New Jersey area and blanketing them with heavy snow on top of the already-existing debris.

In a stroke of good news, however, multiple CBS-owned TV and radio stations, including some very popular ones, here in Sacramento, California have teamed up to raise money with the Red Cross for a hurricane relief fund. As of this moment, since JUST 5:00 A.M. this morning, (it is 9:48 A.M. now), they have raised over $27,500 USD.

After seeing Katrina, I think people understand this time how truly devastating this storm really was. I'm happy to finally see people getting together to help one another with little motivation even being required to do so.

Edit: As of 9:56 A.M., it is now at exactly $28,500 USD!
