Title: Codecs issues
Post by: Ratko Gavrilovic on November 25, 2012, 04:08:33 pm
Hi.
Yesterday I wanted to import a video into movie maker which was .avi.
It told me I needed to install a certain codec to be able to import it, so I installed the necessary codec and now I can successfully import the .avi video I want.
However when I want to add that video to the movie maker timeline, the program simply closes itself.
Now I can't find any decent information on this issue on google. I did find something about disabling one of the codecs but no idea how and where to do this.

Any help?
This is on XP by the way.

Hello, crook,

Bad news first, the crashing is caused by an illegal/corrupt codec file.
Good news, there is a solution, and what is more, a pretty simple one.

The program you need to download and make use of is called K-Lite Codec Pack.

You can get it from here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/k_lite_codec_pack_download.htm (http://www.free-codecs.com/k_lite_codec_pack_download.htm)

Choose "9.5.0 FULL" there, download, extract it and follow all the instructions on the screen :)

brotip:
Despite the moviemaker being an easy video editing program, it doesn't offer you very many additional perks. It is also very old and has a 3/10 chance of crashing while importing bigger video files.

I would recommend you a program called "AVS Video Editor" It is also simple, but it is new and offers you many supplementary things like video animations, precise cropping, and lots of more! 200mb of pure fun, handiness and simplicity.

Regards,
Kemppa

Those are the codecs that I initially downloaded.
The problem is only in Windows Movie Maker, not in Sony Vegas pro for example.
I just preferred WMM a bit because of the short loading time, but I guess it's alright now.

If you want to keep using Windows Movie Maker I really suggest you redo it as there can be only one reason for your problem, which is corrupt codec files. The other one is processor freezing to 0% which is highly unlikely if your computer runs Vegas and MTA without any concern

A little something about Vegas and Windows Movie Maker:

Now, why this problem is and has been actual in XP Movie Maker is that Microsoft never added any additional video codecs to their MvMk, and they were even dumb enough not to put it on the latest XP hotfix (also known as Service Pack 3) Also, currently Microsoft is dropping support to XP [timestamped to 2013], so I really suggest to all people who still have XP to upgrade to Win7, as otherwise you wont be able to run anymore new programs on your computer.

Reason this thing persists in Movie Maker and not Sony Vegas is because Vegas uses a different kind of codec libraries that are downloaded and included in the installation package and stored in the Vegas folders, not windows system32 folder, which means they are in the program by default. Latest Sony Vegas supports near 120 video and sound codecs, all included in the installation :)
