A masked gunman has died after being pinned down and restrained by customers during an armed robbery at a bookmakers in Plymouth, police have said.
The man, in his 50s, entered the Ladbrokes branch in Crownhill Road at 18:45 GMT wearing a gas mask and holding a pistol.
Customers disarmed the man and held him on the floor, police said.
Police arrested the man, who was already unconscious, upon arrival but he died a short time later.
'Immediately tackled'
The man has been identified but next of kin have not yet been informed, a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said.
The spokesman said when the man entered the shop, he was "immediately tackled" by customers and "held down still wearing his gas mask".
When officers arrived, they attempted to resuscitate the man until paramedics arrived but he was declared dead about 20 minutes later.
The police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), has been informed.
Ch Insp Ian Drummond-Smith said: "This is a very serious incident. We cannot speculate on what has actually taken place here today.
"A full investigation has now begun and while the IPCC carry out their investigation it is not appropriate to comment further."
Ladbrokes declined to comment.
He tried to rob Ladbrokes with a gun and the people restraining him, killed him..

Jeezuz. I wonder what actually killed him. This is a bit suspicious. I've never actually heard of someone dying from restraint...
-
Dafuq, sounds like a weak robber .. :poke:

It says he's in his 50's, so I'm assuming he probably had some kind of medical condition.
Unfortunately, with the way the world economy is going, this probably won't be the last time we'll hear about it. So many people are getting desperate now.
-
Ah yes, that is true. Sadly!
-
I bet the cause of death is asphyxiation, probably from the way he is restrained with his mask on.

I was guessing that too. I'm assuming it's either that, or a heart attack caused by the stress/fighting of the situation.

Not the first time it's happend.. About a year ago a security guard caught and restrained someone after he robbed a store in a shopping arcade, he also died, the security guard got sentenced to something like 2 years for 'Man slaughter', apparently he restrained him too hard.. :trust:
-
His own fault. Moral of the story, don't rob a store.

inb4 the people who stopped him get in trouble. Just calling it, because that's the kind of dumb thing that would happen.
-
I doubt he even thought this through.

He had the SAS mask, but not the SAS tactics.

This just in - gunman used a "fake gun" (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-21213789).
-
Just saw it on BBC News, so he lost his life over a few bucks using a fake gun...
Let that be a message to robbers all over the UK, the customers will beat your ass and kill you. :D

Makes me believe that this was more over desperation to survive than anything else then. It's unfortunate that people are going to such lengths now.

I don't have a job, I don't go and rob my local betting shop.. Neither does anyone else in my area. :poke:
It also seems no charges will be brought to the customers that tackled and basicly killed him, instead police have praised them for being very brave. :hurray:

It's not everyone everywhere, but it is becoming more and more common, especially in poorer areas. People can't make ends meet anymore.

And how it should be. If a gunman comes into anywhere you should have the right to do whatever possible to stop him.
