Egyptian army deployed in Suez after anniversary unrest
Violence erupted in Egypt again on Saturday as at least eight people were killed in protests in Port Said following the verdict for the soccer stadium massacre one year ago. The clashes came as Egypt reeled from deadly protests that killed nine people across the country marking the second anniversary of the January 25 revolution.
A judge announced the death penalty for 21 of the 73 defendants on trial for the Port Said massacre. Clashes in Port Said following the announcement of the verdict left at least five dead and dozens more injured, according to the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram.
Seventy-four people died in riots at a soccer stadium in Port Said on February 1, 2012. Eyewitnesses said police did nothing to stop the melee that broke out between two rival soccer teams and even refused to open the doors to allow people to escape. The massacre was held up as proof of the country’s slide towards anarchy.
Over the past week, the “ultras,†or young soccer hooligans who are often at the head of protest marches and responsible for much of the violence at Egypt’s protests, posted online threats promising to destroy and burn buildings across Cairo if they are unsatisfied with the verdict.
If it is anything less than capital punishment, “the country will burn,†one 19-year-old ‘ultra’ named Ahmed told The Jerusalem Post on Friday in Tahrir Square. “We are angry because we haven’t received our rights… it’s not just a football match, the [Muslim] Brotherhood wants to continue to burn the country to they can continue to rule,†he said. “There’s no justice.â€ÂÂ
In the aftermath of clashes on Friday night to mark the two-year anniversary, pundits and politicians focused much attention on a new group of protesters who also could be linked to the ultras: the black bloc. For the first time on Friday, teenagers and young people came out in force dressed head-to-toe in black, many wearing black balaclava ski masks.
The term black bloc began in Germany in the 1970s with a group of anarchists and has been used loosely in a number of other instances since then, including the anti-World Trade Organization protests in Seattle in 1999 and the G20 summit in Toronto in 2010.
In Egypt, members of the black bloc refused to speak to the media. “No one knows anything about them, they appeared three or four days ago,†said Adel, an Arabic literature teacher who saw them in Tahrir on Friday for the first time. “Some people think they are ‘ultras’ but they issued a statement on Friday saying ‘we’re not ultras, we’re not anyone.’†However, some wore ski masks with the insignia of the Ahly soccer team.
Many seasoned activists dismissed the black blocs as angry teenagers looking to stir up trouble who will not have a lasting impact. “We might see a reemergence [in coming protests] but I don’t expect them to hijack the revolution,†said Adel.
“[Are the black bloc] anarchist revolutionaries or 18 year olds who live with their moms & wear black masks thinking life is a video game?†asked one activist sarcastically on Twitter.

Help remind me of a day where there wasn't an army of police waiting outside the stadium, complete with horses

The last time I saw a lack of such at a stadium was when I was 9 years old, if that.

Football is shit, and the violent fans it has make it shitter.
-
It's fun enough to play. Great cardio.
These kids are just trying to stir up trouble and are distracting people from actual issues.

Oh yea, I'de play football all day... I just can't stand watching it on TV or supporting a team, football is a good sport, it's ruined by how large it is with all these football teams and hooligans.
-
Football is in the human DNA, you inherit it from your father most of the times. And football is the king of sports, and yes it does lead to very bad things but so do other sports.

Hahahaha, no. Football is a sport which you can choose to play or not, my dad hates football. :poke:
-
I think football gets a bad name just because of it's popularity and as people watch the game and support their team, naturally there are people who want to step over the line and resort to violence.
-
I don't like watching or playing American Football too much, but I do love playing traditional Football, (known as Soccer in the United States). Everyone just has their personal preferences. To some, it's a choice of fun or dislike, and for others it seems like it's their entire life because they love it so much. For me, I just enjoy playing from time to time and nothing more.
No two people are alike, unfortunately...and when you get a large group of those who are similar together, and one comes up with a crazy idea they all agree with, strange things are bound to happen.

Truth is... Sugar likes to LARP.

and that's why you hate it too, as I said, DNA..

Elaborate more please...

And football is the king of sports
How so? Because the players have a cultural level comparable to pigs and still manage to get millions? Good point it would be. It's not a bad sport but such sentences just let others understand how mentally limited are hardcore football supporters.
and yes it does lead to very bad things but so do other sports.
Completely wrong. Football is one of the most violence-inspiring sports. This is not due to the sport itself but to the ignorance of people going to stadiums and so on. Please make a little list of the sports which generate such shameful situations like this.

American football or actual soccer?
Both. Soccer isn't that big in the United States, but it still gets it's fair share of chaos from time to time. Even baseball has seen similar incidents here. It's quite sad, in all honesty.

Oh right then I guess Rugby is part of my DNA.. No it isn't, what sport you like depends on your personality and body stature, for example a tall skinny person would go for football or basket ball, where as your average chunky person would go for rugby or American hand egg.
No but really, sport isnt in your DNA.

They are football players and they earn their money rightfully practicing a sport and training for the most of their lives. Cultural level comparable to pigs? Right, you should know better from all.
It's not a bad sport but such sentences just let others understand how mentally limited are hardcore football supporters.
It's called king of sports because eventually most fans get psychologically attached with a game and the sadness or joy it may bring along. The term has been established since long ago by people who are not mentally limited unlike you think so.

How is football violence inspiring more than American football, WWE, UFC, Kick boxing / box, ice hockey, rodeo. Football has strict regulations nowadays by all football associations yet people moan how violent inspiring it is. I will agree with the last part about the audience, but that is a minority of football fans if they should be called that.
Yes, please. Tell us about this marvellous theory.

LOL. Seriously you would give away millions and millions for a trained monkey?

At least they do something.
Cultural level comparable to pigs? Right, you should know better from all.
Just have a look to some interviews.

It's a god damn GAME.

People watching and living for it have no rules.

Ima go watch me some cricket..
Never been a fan of football. Always seemed boring to me.
-

Which in return will make more millions. Football is a very valuable market, including media coverage and merchandising. Top clubs can have a revenue from 300-500 million EUR.

Not all players are pigs, according to your theory. Some players can be violent but that violence emerges from their passion to play for their team and inability to control their anger. Football is one of the most physical sport you can get into and it's with a lot of pressure so you expect it has a huge effect on the players.
It's a god damn GAME.
Played by billions of people everywhere in the world, it has become a part of some countries culture as well.
People watching and living for it have no rules.
In England, people can get banned for life if they commit a misdemeanor in a football stadium. Several rules apply in other football associations as well. If the people haven't been educated about the aspects of the sport it's not their fault.

Do you get that there are people starving even if they work all day long in mines and such, and then you see these idiots playing a damned football game and getting so much money that even a 1/2000 could save many families? That's just insane. That's not capitalism or such, that's insane. But that's probably ok for you. Because you have your little show on TV that makes you feel great. That's the aim.
that violence emerges from their passion to play for their team
Oh really? 99% change team according to the payment they are offered. Such passion!
and inability to control their anger.
Then don't allow them to play. But still the main problem is not footballers being violent. The problem is the uncultured mass who watch it.
If the people haven't been educated about the aspects of the sport it's not their fault.
One thing I love of Italy is that "Ignorantia legis non excusat". This means that you are always supposed to know whether what you're doing is legal or not. Ignorance is just not admitted.
If some people in 2013 are still living in the Stone Age that's just their fault.

They are also forced to pay taxes like everyone, and actually many football clubs do charities to help people, but you just can't help everyone.. Oh and NBA players get paid more than all football players and it's watched mainly by Americans whilst football is not, anyway that's not the problem.
Oh really? 99% change team according to the payment they are offered. Such passion!
That depends on the player himself.
Then don't allow them to play. But still the main problem is not footballers being violent. The problem is the uncultured mass who watch it.
I agree.

No. Football is the people's sport and it has it's roots from the society. People get overly attached to it, sure I am attached to a football club in Spain but that's as far as I would go. I would not hurt anyone for my team's pride.
And the only major football hooliganism issues that have occurred during the past years in European contries are in Greece, Italy, Balkans, Russia and EX - USSR countries whilst UK had the biggest problem in football hooliganism, with proper football education it's almost effaced from the stadiums.
