Two Indianapolis paramedics were rushed to the hospital, after their ambulance was hit by a car at the intersection of Senate and St. Clair St.

The accident happened just after 3:30 Saturday morning. A witness described it to Fox 59 as an “explosion,” the impact was so hard. The ambulance flipped on its side, slid a half block and smashed into parked cars.

Investigators spent several hours at the scene. Police indicated that the car had come through the light at St. Clair St. and hit the ambulance as it traveled south on Senate. That light was flashing red on St. Clair and investigators were looking into whether or not the driver tried to stop.

Both paramedics had to be extricated from the ambulance. They were transported to Wishard Hospital in critical condition. Emergency personnel on the scene described it as a very difficult situation, given that the victims were EMT’s and known to many in the public safety community.

The driver of the SUV was conscious and taken to Wishard for a blood draw. An initial police report indicated that an officer on the scene described smelling alcohol on the breath of the 21-year-old female driver. FACT, the Marion Co. Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, was on scene investigating alcohol as a potential factor.

A news conference is scheduled for Noon, when Indianapolis EMS will provide updated information on the crash.

UPDATE: Officials have confirmed one EMT has died following the crash. He has been identified as 24-year-old Timothy McCormick. A second EMT is listed in critical condition at Wishard.

McCormick’s was Indy EMS’ first line of duty death and will be treated just like a firefighter or police death.

Officials say that both EMTs were wearing their seat belts. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. The driver of the other car, a 21-year-old woman, is being interviewed. No charges have yet been filed.

May those brave Paramedics rest in peace. This is truly tragic, and slightly ironic. If the female driver was drunk and is at fault for this crash, I hope she serves a long time in prison for being so stupid and taking two innocent people's lives. It's common sense these days to not DUI, yet people do it anyway. They don't deserve to have access to alcohol or a car if they are going to do things like this...

Tragic, I really hope that the EMT pulls through.

I do too. Unfortunately though, they said he isn't expected to survive.

Like the girl that got shot in the head by the Taliban before being flown to the UK for treatment, looked grim for her but she survived, not that that has anything to do with this...
RIP to the killed EMT, hope the other one pulls through.

I bet you that woman was speeding and driving idiotically.

Anyways, wish the best for the EMT.

I don't disagree with you there. It just doesn't look good. I'm hopeful that he/she survives too. So far that news site hasn't given any updates, though.

Edit: In an unrelated incident in Texas, 2 more line of duty deaths occurred, with several more heroes also hospitalized following a structure fire. It is not known as to whether those who died/in the hospital were Firefighters, Medics, or both. Either way, it is just as sad.

America is fucked nowadays on so many levels.

Seriously, how reckless can you be to hit an ambulance.

They said it was a possible drunk driver. It could have been another car in this situation, and it wouldn't have gained anywhere near this much attention.

America is not "****ed". Dumb people reside all over the world.

Although I do believe America is fucked, I have to agree that this could've happened anywhere.

What surprises me is that they tell everyone the 2nd EMT is expected to die, too. If there's one thing that puts patients down, and stops their healing progress, it's people telling them and the whole world they're going to die.

I don't think such thing exists; however, we can try converting SugarD to a Russian.

Anyone can become a Russian after consuming a certain amount of vodka. :D

Unfortunately I hate Vodka, so good luck there.

The second Paramedic likely doesn't know, as he is in such critical condition, they likely have him in a medically-induced coma to help him heal faster. Given his condition, I doubt they would tell him anyway since he's not stable.

Most likely not, judging by the expectancy of no survival. The doctors will still do their best to try to keep him/her alive, though.

I haven't heard any updates on his/her condition lately, however.

Sorry to bump this...the forum restriction on time for editing topics is currently preventing me from updating this appropriately.

Here is an update on the situation so far, as per the website:
