Title: GTX 560 Ti in Dell Vostro 230
Post by: EenBeeFour on March 08, 2013, 08:10:37 am
Hey how's it going.

I own a Dell Vostro 230 desktop tower that I bought for around 900 bucks on sale from the Dell site. I've had the computer for about 2 years now and it's been a charm for me. I can play most modern games on low settings for a good FPS, aside from GTA IV and BF3.

I've been wanting to upgrade my graphics card to get a good kick in video games and be up to date with the market so I can play on good settings, so I bought an Asus GTX 560 Ti.

Now, mind you, the only thing I have upgraded in a computer is the RAM sticks, and that was in this Vostro 230. I upgraded from 2GB RAM to 4 GB DDR3 RAM.

The problem I'm having is, would the card actually fit into my computer?

This is the Dell Vostro 230 that I own.

This is the GTX 560 Ti that I bought and waiting in a box to be put in.

Another question I have is, I do not have a PSU that would supply enough power. The card specifications recommend a 500 watt PSU for its minimum, but I have a 250 watt PSU. I'm ready to buy a 600 watt PSU (Which was recommended as a good investment rather than a 500 watt) for the computer. What would be the best option for me?

I'm not fantastic with the computer part lingo and jargon, so it would be lovely to explain things that you think might be a bit hard to understand (For example, the pins in a PSU. I don't understand what the pins are, some websites say I may need 6 pins or 4 pins).

ALSO, my current card is a Geforce 310, I have 4GB RAM and a 3.20 GHz Dual Core Pentium E5800 CPU. I can open up the computer to check other physical details if you require them.

EDIT: Vostro 230 Mini (http://www.dell.com/au/business/p/vostro-230/pd) is the computer that I have, the link leads to the specifications. Refer to Mini when it says "Mini or Slim" like in the Power supply specifications.

EDIT 2: I bought a Corsair Builder Series CX600 (http://www.play-asia.com/Corsair_Builder_Series_CX600_V2_600W_ATX_2.3/paOS-13-71-1ej-49-en-70-5g8h.html), hopefully it fits.

The processor you have will not let the GTX 560 Ti work at its full capacity. Go for something more logical.

What do you mean "more logical"?

To explain simply, I am running a Core 2 Duo 3Ghz E8400 with 4Gb DDR2-800 Ram and a GTX560 non-ti 1Gb, my CPU is bottlenecking the GTX considerably, yours will bottleneck even more.

Other than that, I would say go for 600watt or higher on the PSU side of things, I am running a 550watt with the GTX, but it's a non-ti version.

Apparently my CPU won't be bottlenecking it to an extent to others, what would you recommend as a good, but cheap, CPU? I don't have a lot of money to spare in parts now.

If you don't have very much an Intel i3 or an AMD FX4000 would be a sensible choice.

Would I have to buy an entirely new motherboard for the i3 CPU's, as I can only support LGA 775 CPU's?

You know something that would work completely well with your current settings.
I'm not really sure about which GPU exactly, but I think the 295 will do fine.

Yes, and memories too

Memories?

Not sure what he means, the RAM should be fine

tbh man you're better off trying to sell this PC used and getting an entirely new one, as you'll certainly have to replace the motherboard, CPU, and power supply to avoid bottlenecking with that video card. Plus you already bought the RAM, so all you'd be missing is a case. Heh.

You could always try shoving the power supply and the 560Ti into the PC, see if performance improves. If the case won't close or whatever, then you're out of luck

So ElMartu what you are saying that DDR2(which Socket 775 uses) is compatible with a LGA1155/AM3+ combatible board that needs DDR3?

It's impossible for me to have DDR2 ram as well as my motherboard can only carry DDR3, Fuzzy

Ordered a new 600 watt PSU, hopefully it fits into my computer because I'm not great at converting Imperial measurements into Metric measurements.

EDIT: When I get a job I'll save up to buy a new motherboard and chipset. The CPU shouldn't bottleneck the card a lot.

Just to inform you, if this is what your case looks like:

There is a possibility that the GTX 560 Ti won't even fit inside of the case.

The dimensions:
(Depending on which one you're going for)

GTX 560 Ti      9 inches in Length

GTX 560 Ti
448 Cores        10.5 inches in length
Limited Edition

It fits, I just need longer cables to connect the hard drive.

A new case isn't that expensive, perhaps consider getting a more suited case with better airflow too.

I don't have any money at the moment. Would've been lovely if someone told me that it wouldn't fit before I bought all the stuff.

If it doesnt fit, or is tight then look at moving the one hard drive elsewhere in the case.

Yeah I saw that topic. I just got out of it that the two versions of the card has only one fitting in the tower.

EDIT: Would I just need to relocate the HDD in the computer to another spot for room, and if so, would it affect the hard drive at all when it's being used?

EDIT 2: http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/ENGTX560_Ti_DC22DI2GD5/ (http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/ENGTX560_Ti_DC22DI2GD5/) This is what I have.

Well that's the longer card so space might be a little tight.

If you move the HDD, as long as you don't change the cables or anything it will be perfect. Be sure to secure the HDD correctly.

Had a similar problem with another card a year or so ago. Just move your HDD (do get someone else to look at it if you ain't go any idea what to do). It does not affect the hard-drive in any way.

Would moving the HDD be like replacing the Hard Drive in a Playstation 3, or is that a different method altogether?

I can look up some tutorials on how to insert a new HDD or adjust the current one in the computer for help.

I suck in doing shit IRL, But replacing a HDD is one of the easiest things, you remove some cables. Remove the old HDD // Add the new HDD in the department, put some screws in it. Put the cables on and done :l

Unplug the power cable from the mains to the pc
Unplug the sata power cable from the hard drive then unplug the sata cable.
Unscrew the hard drive from the case and find a new position to fasten it down then do all of the steps in reverse.
Generally though the manufacturers don't provide extra locations to reposition the drive.

PSU is a perfect fit, exact dimensions. The only problem I have with it is that it looks like the kraken is coming out of the tower due to the large amount of cables, thankfully it came with cable ties in the box.

EDIT:

I think the card would fit perfectly, when I tried to put it in the first time not knowing the fan needed the extra slot under the DVI-D ports it fit without touching the other side of the tower, but the only problem I had was with the cables not being able to go around the card.

Card fits perfectly, it just covers two of the SATA ports on the motherboard for the HDD and DVD Drive, I bought one long SATA cable from a computer store to see if it would fit so I'm using it for the HDD. I'm without the DVD Drive momentarily, but I can just download the card drivers on the internet.
