Title: Respect the grannies
Post by: Gandalf on May 09, 2013, 04:33:19 pm
As you may know todat Russia celebrated the end of WW2. Every year there is a large parade, and a lot of attention is given to what happened then, and how hard the victory was for those who fought.

It is also a time to stand still at the hardship the generations of those times endured to fight war and then to build their lives back from nothing.

When they started there were not many TV's, not even everyone had a radio. If you wanted to communicate with someone in another country you sent a letter and hoped answer would come within a month.

The jobs they did were not just 8 hours with a lot of breaks, no most worked at least for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. And without safety regulations, numerous breaks or modern tools. Even those in offices would not have a computer doing their job, typed letters were typed by hand and calculations made by hand as well.

They worked hard and long dreaming of a better life for their children and grandchildren. And today most can not even imagine how the work that happened then was done. They reach their goal of giving you an easy life with everything you need. Even at the worst of times today you have more than most people had during and right after the war.

On the 9th of May there is a custom that children are giving flowers to old people as a gesture of thanks of their hard work and effort to keep freedom.
Perhaps this custom should be spread around the world.

If today or tomoroow you see an old person sitting alone somehwere, or meet your grandparents walk up to them and thank them for building the country and the easy life you have. Some will cry. Some will tell you it is not needed. But inside all will glow with pride that their hard work paid off.

We have to respect the past generations, it's our duties. My Grandfather died by cancer when he had worked in a dirty industry for all his life. He just became 50 years old. The salary was less then a crown, which is 0,153872 US dollar today. All to make a living and make their family happy!

All honor to them!

Remember it is not just about your own grandparents. Anyone who is over 70 has been born in the war and lived through hard times.

It's sad that in just years from now, we will not have these people anymore who have lived during the war.

It's not necessarily sad, there is no need for war, it causes unnecessary expenses for countries, tears families apart and so on.

It is sad. Everyone who fought in the war has had his own experience and it is always interesting to hear one's story, whether it is your family or not.

Of course hearing about war stories is always good for progression in the future, but you can't say there weren't bad outcomes from the war either.
Families torn apart, innocent civilians murdered because someone was ordered to attack them or bomb them.

But after all, there should be the utmost respect shown for those that were in the war, and those who simply survived the war alike.
Tough times that they have managed to work through to make the most of the rest of their lives and to pass their stories on to future generations.

Respect to the grannies, they are just like speed bumps in the traffic. They drive so slow in traffic and make the people behind the car slows down.

I never said the war was good.
I said it's a shame losing the people who were in it.

It is very important that we take the time to really think about what happened back in World War II. Life as a whole was so much different from what it is today. Let's remember and try to imagine what life was like for the people you feel connected to, in any way, from that time. I personally like to pay my respects to all the soldiers that had to fight in the war, on both the axis' and allies' sides, because I believe that the vast majority of the soldiers that fought for, or with the Germans, deserve to be remembered equally as much as their opponents, in the same way.

Great message.

The wisdom of a war veteran is invaluable - my Grandfather fought in WW2 and some of his countries subsequent wars and after hearing what he and those who fought with him went through and what they saw I can only thank God for the life I have now. I know in some cultures people like to throw the elderly away into old peoples homes eventually when their age starts taking toll on their bodies and they start becoming helpless, but what we must remember is when we were in our time of need they stepped up to the plate and gave their today for our tomorrow. This doesn't even have to apply to war veterans but even the elderly who shaped our society or even our family elders. I have nothing but respect for the elderly as should everyone.

Unlike in the West, where the term Germans is used for their opponent, in Russia it is called the victory over the Nazi regime. There is no finger-pointing at Germans. For Russians they defeated the Nazi's, cleaned the country from those who were supporting their ideas, and that is the end of it.

But the real lesson here is not just about war. The old people worked very hard to give us what we have today. It is our duty not to throw it away but work as hard as we can to give future generations the same or an even better life.
We may only live once, but what we do has effect on those who live after us.

Interesting, I didn't really know what the general view towards it was in Russia. There's a lot of different opinions about that and on what the Soviets did during the war, but this is not the place for them.

Man, it was so sad. It was very very sad, there the boy pushed the other one, so he can fall to the grandpa, in this scene when he didn't say anything and just with difficulty picked up the thing he was holding, i was ready to cry. He set his life infront of the death for the new generation that would push him and laugh at him? Wierd things...

Idiots have always existed within humanity, even in their generation; the internet just made it easier for them to multiply today.

Won't be surprised if little or no idiots from their generation remain because they died off in the wars.

We must reflect on out generation and remember that who we are now, will be what the world ends up to be. If people want to honour YOLO and SWAG, we probably won't get far. However, if people just grow up and realize that they can make a change, things WILL get better. Stuff like this is no laughing matter, and I hope that others realize before it is too late and we're all doomed when Kim Jong Un's clones come to power in every country.

I don't agree fully with you, yes YOLO and SWAG won't get our generation far but come on, i think this is 90 % used by teenagers or young people, if you are young you still need to discover who you are and what you want and mainly we just take over trends, but the older our generation become the more we will get rid of the YOLO and SWAG shit. This is just called puberty. Who knows what our old grandparents there generation had as stupid trends and statements. However, the internet DOES spread this trends and bullshit much faster than the old generation, and once you post yourself in a stupid way on the internet you won't get ride of it and it will not be good for you to find a professional job.

The people who honour YOLO and SWAG will get less as our generation gets older, because idiots die off far easier. :devroll:
