Title: NVIDIA and ATI: 8 Series and the 2k Series. Dont be fooled!
Post by: Neave on November 04, 2007, 08:54:16 pm
My new laptop has a Nvidia 8400M and it doesn't seem to be performing by the standards it should, it's lagging a bit when i play NFSU2 with top graphics, I suppose it's from lack of good controller, whats your opinion?

Well another person fooled :)

The new series of graphic cards both by ATI  and Nvidia are basicly the same as the 7 Series for nVidia and the 1.8k Series for ATI. The only exception is the 8800GT (512, 640, 768 version) and the ATI 2900HD

Heres a chart the the similarities.. the Only difference between the cards below 8800 and 2900.. Is DirectX 10.. The newer cards do support DX10.. But it dosent mean they are any good at it.

Nvidia

GeForce 7600 ~ GeForce 8400 ~ year 2004/5

GeForce 7800 ~ GeForce 8600 ~ year 2005/6

GeForce 7900/7950 ~ GeForce 8800 380MB Version ~ year 2006/7

ATI
ATI Radeon x1600 ~ ATI Radeonâ„¢ HD 2400

ATI Radeon x1800 ~ ATI Radeonâ„¢ HD 2600

ATI Radeon x1900/50 ~ ATI Radeonâ„¢ HD 2900 (Not as much)

All the graphic cards listed with the exception of ATI 2900 and Nvidia 8800 are somewhat up-to-date, Graphic cards that i have grouped together are very close in price, therefore very close in performance

As of now i do NOT recommend buying any high end graphic card, These new cards are still in their infant stage and id wait for more, Once nvidia and ATI stops rolling out new versions ofeach card. Then go ahead and buy them

Note: If you are wondering if your graphic card is good enough for your needs.. Well want some backup on that? :P Download Fraps. Choose the graphic settings you want, and turn the FPS Detector on for Fraps, As long as your 35~ FPS and above constanly, your in good shape

Not quite fooled, for 1000€, theres no better laptop to buy, or is it?
And, there's only one laptop available in portugal with the 8800GT, but it's 1800€ and doesn't have a numpad.And it isn't the 512, it's 256 still.

I think the word laptop is the key word here.

But I agree with you, it sucks.
Still, any way to improve it? SA is running with ~15fps

On your standards, what laptop would you have bought?
I bought a LG E500 SP18P
