Title: Windows 8 + Windows 7 Problem
Post by: cchipscookies on May 27, 2013, 03:41:41 pm
Did a really stupid thing to my other laptop.

I dual booted a copy of Windows 8 and Windows 7 on my Thinkpad X230t (I wanted the touchscreen features in Windows 8). Then.... I decided that I didn't like Windows 8 because everything didn't work. (Pen features, 4G connection etc...)

I have split my 500GB SSD to 2 Partitions to dual boot.

When I deleted the Windows 8 Partition, it should boot into Windows 7 right? Well it didn't. It started into Windows 8's Startup repair. Well the OS isn't even there.

I have to use advanced options to get it to boot to Windows 7.

In msconfig (in windows 7) I deleted Windows 8 entry in the boot tab. In the startup tab, it says selective startup. But when I put it back in Normal boot, Windows 8 Appears again!

Attached some Screenshots.

It's good that you did the thing with msconfig. Press Start and type "Create and Format" then go into "Create and format hard disk partitions". Right click the windows 8 partition and delete it, then do what you wish with the unallocated space. After that it should launch into Windows 7.

The newer OS generally takes the spot as the "Primary Operating System" so by removing Windows 8 you also remove the dual boot ability.

I deleted my Windows 8 Partition already.

Windows 7 is using 100% of the drive. I don't know why it's still using the Windows 8 Boot Loader.

Thanks for your replies!

As I said, it doesn't matter if you had installed Windows 7 then Windows 8, Windows 8 will generally take priority as the main operating system.
By removing Windows 8, it will mess with the booting of Windows 7 too.

As you can see in my screenshots,

in msconfig, Windows 7 is my Default and Primary OS in both conditions.

(selective and normal boot)

By deleting the Windows 8 partition you have then caused some problems within the BIOS I assume in regards to boot order.

Windows 8 installed its own bootloader (also known as Master Boot Record (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_boot_record)), which is currently being used and its own settings. Now, Windows 8 is removed, but since the bootloader is not saved on that partition of HDD, it is still active and being used.

Windows 8 bootloader can no longer find Windows 8 from the HDD, which causes it to run the Startup Repair.

To fix it, you need to go into Windows 7 Recovery Mode (I believe it is done by inserting the DVD and then running it somehow, can't remember right now) and inside there, you need to reinstall Windows 7's master boot record.
A guide with pictures: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record.html (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record.html)

Had the same thing, when I dualbooted XP and Ubuntu. I removed Ubuntu, but Ubuntu's master boot record called GRUB was still in use. Had to repair XP's MBR, which did the deal. Process is slightly different on Windows 7.

Glad to hear that.
I installed Windows on my PC and my laptop via USB aswell, because I do not have Windows disks and my PC doesn't have CD/DVD reader/writer at all, didn't buy one, because I do not find it necessary.
