Title: "Like" button
Post by: Leon. on August 21, 2013, 07:39:42 pm
Can we get a 'like' button on the forum or something?
Or something similar. Like +1, thumbs up, whatever. Feel like it'd help get rid of useless "+1" posts.

Not needed but ok if you can make it, i guess you saw that on croatian forums like http://www.bug.hr/forum/ :O

EDIT; Something like this: (http://imageshack.us/a/img32/3508/67f8.png)
You can like and unlike, and it will be shown how much likes and unlikes post have...

Yeah definitely supported.

On various forums I'm a member of it's a great success.

Seriously, I like the the heck out of this thing. I am generous with "Likes" and I think it is awesome I don't have to quote the previous poster and do a "+1", plus the poster now actually gets to see that their post reached somebody... And it doesn't clutter up the thread, its neat!

There's a lot of stuff to like (wah wah wah) about the new forum software, but I have to say Likes are one of my most used.

Anyway, don't mean to wear out the record, but Rudy - super job, seriously. This whole new deal is really really cool. Thanks a lot for doing this. As one IT guy to another, the fact that you got this whole thing migrated with so little downtime... very impressive. Nice job.

it will improve our quality of life

It will improve the Quality of topics Ex:

Topic from 1 august - Gta guide - Everything, blablablalblablalblsalba ( + 340 likes )
topic from 1 june - Grand theft Auto Guide - What you need, what you do ( +34 likes )

Gues you will take the first to read as first, as many more liked it.

This idea is Noted.

I wouldn't support a dislike button as that may cause bad feelings in forum users and can possibly be abused to target people. However a like button would be a nice addition.

I totally support the idea about the +, but not about the -. Got to agree with Jacob there.

Yeah, a dislike button isn't what we're proposing, and isn't something that should be implemented.

Dislike button won't be a good idea.

I like this idea!

Although, I would remove it for Groups and Families / Clans. This would only lead to "My family is much better than yours, look at the likes!!!11!!1"

This actually used to exist on the forum, but was hardly used, and when it was, was often misused. It was also removed because it did not look very professional, and it didn't make much sense to have social media functions on a forum aimed at community discussions, not personal ones.

What I would more recommend is that someone create a new social media site for Argonath RPG players, like the ones that used to exist. Then you could use such an idea as this on those sites, as they would make a bit more sense there.

Wait, like a private facebook clone Sugar? That would be a project i'd like to take up, hand-in-hand with a messaging service.

Essentially that idea, yes. There have been a couple of them in the past, but most did not last for more than a year.

WHOA, SLOW DOWN THERE, SPEED RACER.
A lot of you are COMPLETELY, and I mean COMPLETELY, missing the point of this topic, to the point where no amount of BBcode and screaming at my monitor and farting from the force of how hard my abdomen is contracting from belting out these screams of absolute FURRRYYYYYYYYYYYY does not serve the justice of explaining just how much you guys are missing it... I thought the concept behind this idea could be easily grasped without much explanation :x

No, this is not supposed to be ANYTHING like Facebook, dawg. I simply used the term "like button" as it can basically be used as an umbrella term for any feature that refers to the "+1-ing" of a post. The purpose of this idea is to:
1. Eliminate any "+1" posts or any of similar nature; in other words, any posts that do nothing but show a user agrees with a post. On especially "hot" threads, this can eliminate thread clutter and allow the big essays to be more easily sifted through.
2. Allow users to easily discern the quality of posts without necessarily reading the post in detail and decide if it is worth reading... again, helpful in "hot" threads, especially the fun ones that get controversial and passionate... mmmm, sounds like anal.
3. Get posters to strive to make posts with a higher quality in order to achieve more +1's. I know it sounds silly but e-penising and self-fulfillment is behind this.

This idea is to apply to individual posts rather than topics. Many forums, especially those regarding the acquisition/inquiry of information, have these types of features to back up the quality of the post. I've seen (and regularly visit) a forum that has a post rating system that allows a user to add green/red stars, green being positive and red being negative, along with comments next to the stars that justify their rating without the rater's name. These ratings have to be approved by moderators before taking effect, in order to prevent blatant hate-rating or other forms of abuse.

Of course, with only a PLUS system in place that has no effect on the profile, abuse shouldn't really be an issue.
