Internet problem

I got fed up with my computer getting drowsy ( Morrowind started lagging :/ ) so  I cleaned my computer the first time in two years. I put the PC back together and it started fine. One problem: It doesn't recognise the internet cable. Any helpful advice / solutions?

EDIT: FYI I do have the chance to use a memory stick to transfer items from my laptop to my PC, so if anyone knows any good programs, suggest them.

Check over your network card, if it is correctly in correct slot.
If you have integrated network card, then i think it is not working correctly.

wth's a network card? I have a modem. (Yes, I have tried resetting the modem)
