No need of DDR3 memory, just costs more and LITTLE bit performance boost.. Not worth it imo.. (Unless you buy Core i7)
NEVER buy Phenom.. Phenom II is good but Phenom sucks... (Meaning if you buy AMD, buy Phenom II)
GTX 280... It's really good, but why pay from something when you can get the same with cheaper (HD 4890)...
600W+ PSU...? No way... One video card needs less than 500W... But I recommend Corsair HX520W... One of the best PSU, maybe even the best..
Like Wash said, you need a good motherboard... Think about only Asus, it's the best for making motherboards..

Phenom X4 is not a bad processor, if you're looking for some quad-core cheap.
AMD = Intel.
there's no difference basically.
both have great peformance.
i had a P4 3.06 it used to run games well, now i have a 7750 X2 2.7ghz and i am happy.

a simply good video card like HD 4850 just takes 250W only!
a HD 4870 takes 300W
HD 4890 Take arround 330W

let's see now processor's power consumption.
Q6600 may take 200W
usually quad-core processors takes arround 200W - 300W.
so, if you really wish to not have lack of power supply, 600/700W PSU.

I have a 1200W Thermaltake PSU, and I wonder whether it's really needed?

*Note: I also have an Intel Core i7 965 Extreme Edition clocked @ 3.2GHz.

a 800W or 1000W PSU is enough.

Tell me how you get video card like GTX 295 to full load with some game? Only Furmark (or like that) can set it to 100% load..
Processor @ 100% load, yeah, with Intel Burn Test.. Not even Prime95 set it to 100% load even programs shows so...
