That shouldn't be an issue, because you don't need to go to the desktop to install XP. Enable booting from your CD drive, then follow the prompts after you turn on your computer.

When you start up you're computer, usually it says somewhere on the corner of your screen for you to press a key (usually delete) to enter the setup menu. Press that key, then in the setup menu, you need to look around for something with regard to booting, then set it to boot from the CD drive first.

Partitions doesn't not make any difference installing Windows..
Just put the CD-drive to first boot device, put the cd in, install.. You don't need to goto windows to install.. Just press some button when it says "Press any button to boot from CD" and it will start installing :)

Install it to smaller one.. Usually there is one smaller and one bigger..
If you don't know if you've installed it on BOTH partitions, here's how you can check if you have.
Boot up, if it asks which Windows will start, then you have installed it on both partitions, if it does not ask it, then you have installed it right :)

So, you had Vista on it and then you removed it and installed XP?

Or you had vista on it and install XP next to it?

Installing XP when Vista is already installed will give problems in the boot version.
