More news:Violence in Tripoli threatened to spiral out of control early Friday as efforts failed to end bloodshed in Lebanon’s second city that has claimed the lives of at least 18 people.
In line with the pattern set in the previous four days, clashes intensified again Thursday evening as mortar bombs and machine-gun fire rocked Lebanon’s second-largest city. Residents huddled in bomb shelters or in the safer, interior rooms of buildings close to the front line.
In addition to the fatalities, around 200 have been wounded in the battles since they erupted Sunday between supporters of President Bashar Assad in the predominantly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and backers of the Syrian uprising in the mostly Sunni neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh.

Shops in the city were closed Thursday and streets deserted. Residents began running out of food in the two rival neighborhoods.
“People are finding it difficult to secure food for their families, leading some to leave the neighborhood, risking their lives in the process, in order to find supplies for their loved ones,†Khaled Shakhshir, a resident of Bab al-Tabbaneh, told The Daily Star.
For their part, residents of Jabal Mohsen said their area was totally isolated every time fighting breaks out.
Security sources told The Daily Star that all efforts to secure a cease-fire in the city failed and contacts between Tripoli’s politicians and leaders of the gunmen in Bab al-Tabbaneh had been severed.
The sources said battle commanders in Bab al-Tabbaneh were demanding that Rifaat Eid, the head of the Arab Democratic Party that dominates Jabal Mohsen, leave the neighborhood.
Another demand is that Hezbollah pulls out from the Syrian town of Qusair. The Tripoli fighting began Sunday shortly after the Syrian army backed by Hezbollah fighters began a massive assault on the rebel-held Qusair.
The sources also said gunmen were coming to Bab al-Tabbaneh from Akkar to take part in the fighting.
