Metallica, amonst a few other bands were pioneers for Thrash Metal, and I respect them for that. They are indeed, in my opinion one of those bands that will be in the history books of Metal/Rock.

Also, Metallica is one of Dream Theater's Influences :D (Kinda shows how long they have been around for  )

But yes, none of the less, great band.
In my view, what makes good music is the following - Good musicianship, skill involved (none of that crap where you just play 3 chords throughout the whole song and your done), technicallity, and ofcourse, good tunes and melodies ontop of all of this. Now for a band who can do this, and I do think Metallica have, It requires alot of skill.

Music is music, you can compare just as easily.
Compare beethoven with cannibal corpse and see how it goes.
And as you said, it's a matter of taste - I just don't think you should compare (imo) two different genres.

I aint santa... Ive got something for the bad bitches too.

Metallica are overated imo. The only albusm I enjoy these days are the first two probably because alot of the riffs were written by Mustaine who is a superior writter to Hammet. As for the other albums MOP and AJFA bore me alot and I find them both to be very stale. As for the newer stuff The Black Album and load were dull straight up heavy metal and reload was the former two albeit in cover form. I don't think ST Anger needs any description, Stell tin can drum of death nuff said. As for the newest one its a return to their thrash sound but a more AJFA sound, an era which as mentioned I dont enjoy. Clearly I can't deny their impact upon metal but imo Slayer are the best thrash band as their sound pushed in terms of sheer speed and extremity (see Reign and Blood) and also a proggier side (Seasons In The Abyss and South of Heaven).

Compare beethoven with cannibal corpse and see how it goes.

Technically that would be possible, when comparing them musically.
Although for this particular example, you'd probably have to go deeper into the actual structure than with most.

Beethoven at his time was how we see Metal, punk or Death Metal now (believe it or not).

He was a very rebellious person going against all the classical rules of music, such as structures/forms.
And he was unique in his compositional styles.

Music that is 'rebellious' these days that 'break rules', are typically punk rock, and the variations of rock and metal. That is, music that broke the rules. Metallica when first formed broke many rules that were layed down by Metal bands of the previous generation. (Think Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin or early Iron Maiden, then compare to Metallica). Many rock bands were known for breaking rules, making their own up etc.

Imo, they are comparable but to an extent. Ofcourse, apart from this point, there is no other comparison I can see.

To further the point made about Metallicas sound (created by breaking the rules so to speak) it can be explained by saying the Thrash sound came from a combination of New Wave Of Brittish Heavy Metal (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden Saxon), hardcore punk (Black Flag, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys) and Speed Metal (Motorhead). On a slighlty off kilter point we owe alot to the hardcore punk movement in shaping metal into what it is today as from thrash began a quest to get more extreme hence why black and death metal and grindcore amongst many a netal sub genre came to be.
