Hi guys, I'm kind of getting freaked out over the past few days. For the past two weeks I have been catching myself in a weird state of sleep during the night, mostly at 4-6 in the morning, I find myself my eyes wide open, but not being aware of the fact I'm awake, and then when I finally come to that realisation, I completely wake up. I have been trying to google what the hell is that but havent found any help. Have any of you expierenced this before?

Maybe you were resting in a "brain asleep" phase? I don't even think that this is part of lucid dreaming or sleepwalking, so... yeah.

I have no idea dude.

Maybe you are sleepwalking at the night ?

Lol no, my mom sleeps in the other room and she already complains when I try my best to sneak into the toilet so she wouldn't hear me, so imagine if I was sleep walking lol..

Sleep paralysis?

Nah, sleep walking is followed by visions and actual awareness that you are awake.

I just found out a reference to my state on the internet:

It sounds very much like sleep paralysis - look that up. I know it's been mentioned previously in this topic but do not rule it out. I have experienced this several times, and it amazes me every time. You seem fully conscious but you cannot move your body at all, as if your brain is still sleeping but your eyes are fully functional along with your mind. You can look around the room, think about raising your arm but your arm cannot move at all. If this is what happens to you then there is nothing to worry about.

It's usually put down to stress and anxiety but it's one of those unexplained things.

Nocturnal lagophthalmos is the inability to close the eyelids during sleep.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagophthalmos

Possible mild disorder of consciousness.
Possible brief and light Vegetative State. This is a state where the patient is awake (eyes open) but not aware of himself or his surroundings. The patient moves by reflex (automatic reaction) only and not on his own.
Described symptom:
Has sleep-wake cycles, seen with the eyes being closed or open. Eyes may be seen blinking or moving.
http://www.drugs.com/cg/disorders-of-consciousness.html

This doesn't mean that you have Lagophthalmos or a consciousness disorder but it could be possible that some of the symptoms or reactions are bound to a diagnoses of the sort. I wouldn't be too worried, even if it is weird and maybe rare, the only real danger I can see is your eyes being a bit dry after too much time open.

Just a few days ago something like this happened to me. I was not able to move my leg for almost a minute. I could feel it but it was too heavy for me to lift. It wasn't like it felt heavy actually, but it was glued to the bed. Your case does seem like sleep paralysis.

Also have you considered it to be lucid dreaming?

I doubt there is a "strange stage" ... I think you are just prosessing something... To be sure, meet a doctor... As long as our members are no doctors, I doubt you'll find as medical solution... Just guesses :)

@charlie: this cold be a case of your blood not streaming true your vains... I think :) i have this with my arm sometimes, when I lay down on the sode of my pacemaker. I have take my other arm to move my arm in that case lol.

Do not be afraid of things you do not know (yet)...

I really think the actual medical guessing / rambo doctor advice needs to stop.

It's not sleep paralysis... I'm just awake, but not aware of being awake..
