The Kepler Spacecraft was launched in 2009 with the specific aim of locating exoplanets. That is, planets with similar attributes to Earth and a safe enough distance from a parent star to sustain life.

When it's not snapping the first ever pictures of Pluto or scouring Mars for skeletons and pyramids, NASA is exploring the depths of space for life-supporting planets.

Now the space agency has put out a statement saying it will hold a press conference to reveal: "new discoveries made by its planet-hunting mission, the Kepler Space Telescope".

The announcement will take place at 4pm on Thursday, July 23 and could involve the discovering of a second Earth that potentially supports life.

In theory, wormholes could help us propagate gigantic distances. The only problem is that we may never have the ability to actually create one.

How long did it take the Kepler? 7 years?
I am really excited about this as it is confirmed by NASA as the first-near-earth that might be habitable.
Another 20 years and we got 2 earths to take care of

I think 1400 light years.

Unless we can find some way around the theory of relativity, it will take a huge amount of time (from the perspective of people on Earth) to get there, even if we are able to travel at approximately light speed for a significant portion of the journey (and even then it will take the craft over 1400 years from the perspective of the astronauts).
