One question that I have is, should I have my Xbox horizontal or vertical. I know that if you move the console with the disc in then it scratches it but which is the best way to have it to combine disc life with a good amount of air flow.

As long as you don't have your Xbox in a confined space, it wont over heat, and if you do have it in a confined space, it will take a good few hours to overheat...

When it does overheat, you get frequent crashes... So, you turn it off.

As I said earlier, vertical and horizontal really don't matter, just pick which ever you prefer whether it be because of space or airflow or whatever...

I have to say, I have personally had bad experiences with the Xbox being Vertical and discs being scratched. I've also never had a problem with air flow in the Horizontal position.

OMG now I am confused!!! Microsoft made the Xbox to stand vertical but can only stand horizontal? The idea was for it to look like it was taking a deep breath, when horizontal it looks like a crushed pancake.

look they are both potentially good machines (xbox360 and ps3) but Microsoft rushed the xbox out before the Ps3 because last time (ps2 xbox ) it was the other way arround  >>
the Ps 2 was less powerfull but put on the market before the xbox , this resulted in the ps2 to be more popular even though it was less powerfull , MS saw this and that is why they tried the same , but they rushed it so the 360 wasnt tested enough . thats how it Happened

Well, its your choice as to how you do it. But certainly in Game and Gamestation they advise everyone to put it horizontal. However, the worst problems have been with the older (2005, 2006) versions, so maybe they have corrected any error. So maybe its fine.  :)

I got one made in November 2007, just delivered today.

:ps: I don't care what console is the best. I back Microsoft all the way. Sony has made 5 consoles (PS PSone PS2 PS2slim PS3). Microsoft has made only 2 consoles and already they have made a great console worthy of competing on today's markets without as much experience as Sony.

My 360 is right next to my Wii and Ps2 standing vertical.

Wii is much smaller, so should it cause much problems?

FUNSIES

I have mine on with a fan next to it blowing on it to cool it down, I've played on it for like 6 hours, no crashes, no problems at all just warm air coming out of the back.

Better to have the fan facing away from the xbox...

Basically, you want the fan there to extract hot air, and depending on where you have your fan, you could just be blowing the hot air back into the system.

So... Try and get your external fan to work WITH the xbox fan.

No, think of it this way... If you're looking at your Xbox in a horizontal position, the side vents allow cold air into the Xbox to cool it down. The fans at the back of the Xbox are to extract the warm air from the Xbox so there is a continuous circulation of air in the Xbox. I have my fan pointing at the main vent at the right side to keep the air flowing more efficiently. If I had a fan blowing the back of the console then yeah it would just blow air back at the fans.

I think Microsoft should think about making the air flow more efficient in the next Xbox. Maybe two quiet fans to extract air and one quiet fan to draw cold air into the Xbox but if you live in a hot country then that would be useless.
