Well mainly if you ask Estonians, what kind of nation are they, they answer : We are singing nation. It is mostly because Estonia is holding a lot of singing festivals. The first singing festival was held in 1869 to celebrate of getting rid of slavery in Livonia 50'th anniversary. And from that year on Estonia has held Singing festival after every 4 year [with one exception]. Contemporary singing festival in Estonia looks like this:

In the 1980's when the political map of Europe was drastically changing. In these times nations in the Eastern block had to have something in common, what brought people together. For Polish it was Catholicism, but for Estonians it was once again singing. One of the most important event during that period was Öölaulupidu [Night Singing festival] where was 500 000 people out of 1.5 million, so every third person. This year Estonia tried to recreate that event and this is how it looked like.

And for the last, in the late 1980's Punk culture reached Soviet Estonia. Now 20 years later many teenagers have grown up since then and they thought it would be nice to sing those songs again what they used to 20 years ago, so they made Punk Singing festival. And this how it looked like.
