Bandit - belongs to band...
Mafiosi - belongs to mafia...

I think the problem is in the "right column"...

In Russia "gangster" - member of a criminal gang/mafia in 30ths in AMERICA...
"Mafiosi" - member of a criminal family on Sicily
"Bandit" - member of a criminal group in Russia... Can be called "brother" ("bratok") - its more softy... From that comes the word "Brotherhood" (Bratva)...

Russians separate "Bandit" and "Bratok" according their actions...
"Bandit" - High threat of using the power against people... Band does not belong to the criminal net has minimum communications and often gets in trouble when meets "Brothers"
"Brother" - Organized... Using force against people - minimum... Only if that will be a request from the highest ranks... Which are very strict to this...

So actually where from the whole world took "Russian Mafia" and threat with it in TV propaganda - have no idea...

As for the "gangsta" - probably I will be the one here with such opinion, but it seems normal that members of street gangs use a word "gangsta" towards their members and themselves...
