Yes as long as your group is not based on family clan (mafia)...

I suppose here are at least three groups of people who put in the "gangster" word different meanings...

For one group - every criminal can call himself a gangster as long as he is walking around and shots people nobody knows why and he himself as well...

For the second group the word "gangster" just does not exist... Instead of that they have a word "gangsta" and this word is used only to the black people (racism as it is)...

I suppose that only more grown generation has idea what gangster is really...
But talking about meaning of it when the word was totally screwed in meaning - not possible and therefore not useful IMHO...

Well, I live in London, we get a lot of so called "gangsters", and then there is the normal guys, who talk slang, but don't claim to be gangsters, people act like gangsters to show off towards girls, most of the time, the good looking girls are the bad ones, who like "bad" boys, so, this is what "gangsters" do...

1: Low Batty: Pulling your bottoms half way.
2: Slang
3: Act Tough
4: Make Fun Of Others To Show Off

And this is what a normal guy, if you get what I mean, does:

1: Wear's baggy clothes, or normal clothes.
2: Talks Slang.
3: Dosen't Act Tough, sometimes for a joke yes.
4: Makes More Friends Then Enimies

Sometimes, when me and my friends are just talking, we joke around, we never intend to show off towards girls, I'll give you a example, the other day, I was playing Table Tennis against one the so called "Gangsters", then one of the "bad" girls, came up and took the ball and said, I'll play with my hand aginast me, then when she throwed the ball to me, I picked it up and continued playing, she says to me "I think your scared of girls", the truth is, I don't really want to interact with these girls, as sexy as they might be, I have many friends as girls, but its the right ones, I've had experience "trying" to be one of them so called "gangsters", just didn't suit me, because I reliased it was stupid, this was around 2007.

As for rappers, rappers are trying to sell records in these times, but if you want a rapper who was a real thug...

Tupac, he rapped from his heart, because he actually lived in the life style this times rappers rap about.

I listen to rap, hip-hop, if anyone says that only gangsters listen to rap/hip-hop, they are wrong, I just enjoy listenting to this type of music like other people enjoy other styles of music.

Tell me about it, man..
Since two years back every douche in my class have been calling me "gangster" just because I listen to rap music (And this isn't even gangsta rap. Stuff like "Dear Mama" and "It Ain't Easy" with Tupac, you know?).

Have anyone seen My Name Is Earl? Well, I dress like Earl. Flannel all the way. They listen to Swedish rap (horrible IMO), wear baggy pants, talk slang, wear tilted "baseball caps" (those "hip" caps with stickers) and yet in still, I am the one that is trying to be a "gangsta". Oh well..
My town had a problem with nazi's and whatnot a couple of years back, so I guess they are trying to be like their older brothers, because at the same time, they are also racist. The usual stuff. Calling everybody "negros" (not very racist, but I guess it has a different meaning around here) or "n*ggers" (mostly on MSN, though. Lack of balls).. Makes me want to punch them in their eyes. And I have almost done it several times, but then I use my brain and decide to not go down on their level. One of these days I'mma kick them in their guts though. And then take a shit in their faces. AVGN style.

So just because I listen to rap and funk, written by black people, I'm some kind of gangsta-wannabe wigger. That sucks. And I'm sort of a nerd, too. I don't know if they ever realized that, lol..
