Does anybody even appreciate old music anymore?  I mean it seems most people just listen to all this heavy metal and crazy shouting and stuff.  The people who listen to rap listen to this, "Death Rap" and stuff.  And the other kinda rap and hip-hop they play on the radio which almost always has to do with something sexual or taking your hooker down to your ghetto to rape and murder her.  I mean wtf.  What is this now lol.  Does anybody still listen to the old stuff like back in the 80's and stuff.  Pop music and disco or good rap around when it first started.  Like the sugarhill gang, Run-D.M.C, or kurtis blow, etc.

Maybe it's just the music i attached to when i was younger or something but I just can't seem to understand why people love this new hip-hop and rap.  Don't get me wrong, I like modern music but some of it is just horrible but everybody just seems to like whatever comes out and has to do with killing people or something like that.  The definition of rapping is the rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes, wordplay, and poetry.  Is there something i'm missing?  Why can't people just rap about something other than violence or just something random.  I guess you can tell how the world has changed by what kind of music people like now.

That's why

I can see that but i'm looking for a reason besides like, "Just because that's what's new" if there is anyone else with a different reason.

Is that the only reason, or does anybody else have a different one?

I like old hip-hop, it's awesome. Sugar Hill Gang, Public Enemy, N.W.A, etc, and I also like Death Rap.
And Death Rap is not the popular thing, there's not many people I know listening to it. Me and Philip is the people I know. If you haven't listened alot to Death Rap or looked into it, you will probably just think 'Blah this is some guy just talking about killing people like everyone in hip-hop do, he's just f**king sick', and I understand why you may think so.

The creator of Death Rap is Necro (Some of his friends are with him, Mr. Hyde, Goretex, Ill Bill sometimes..), and he's basicly doing Death Rap like people do Death Metal - to release agression, plus he's fascinated about kind of what's after death and come from a very violent enviroment and witnessed alot of shit.

So, what's so wrong about Death Rap, when people do Death Metal? (Nothing wrong with Death Metal) It's same thing, but it's hip-hop beat and rapping instead of singing or whatever. And it's not that they can't rap or rhyme or whatever, cause they are great at writing lyrics, even if it's mostly about violence. And Necro, Ill Bill and Goretex are metal fans too.
I don't get why people shit on Death Rap and not Death Metal.

And all rap is not about violence, but most people doing hip-hop is from a place with alot of violence obviously, so many people rap about it where they come from, but now people say they are someone they are not. Today most people just rap about partying, big chains, expensive cars, money and all that bullshit, like Lil' Wayne, Flo-Rida do for example.

There's still good rappers not talking about violence all the time though.. listen to Sabac Red. He's a friend of Necro for like, 15 years back I think, and he's talking about what's wrong with the world, and meaningful stuff, he's a lyrical genius and f**king awesome. He used to be more like Necro, just not as rugged, but now they are the so called 'Positive and Negative'.

I like real rap, f**k Mainstream bullshit.

I understand what you are saying, this is the kind of thing I was looking for as a reason.  And it is a very good reason.  I will listen to that song once i'm done DJing so I can hear it properly.  But I never really liked most of the death metal songs or the heavy metal or death metal.  I grew up listening to music like upbeat sort of music you can dance to and some sing along with and stuff.  So that may be why I dislike some of that kind of music.

Lavamike, I really coulnt agree with you more. I myself dont listen to any mainstream music whatsoever, and havnt been for over a year now.
I dont care about 'fashion' or the 'trend' in music. Music is music, and I like what I like. I dont like something to fit in.

I listen to Progressive Rock/Metal.
Prog Rock having originated in the 70s from bands like Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, which I ALL love and respect so much. And Progressive Metal orginated in early 80s, bands like Queensryche, and Dream Theater (My favorite band). Then later came other progressive metal bands like Opeth and Dominici.

I love the genre Progressive Rock because I grew up with it, my dad always listened to Camel and Genesis on the stereo and ive just grown up to love this music because of its huge amount skill and musicianship involved. This is on the other scale compared to the SHIT nowadays. (No offence) but music nowadays is just too.. TOO freakin easy and simple for my ears.. I get bored outta my mind listening to music on the radio, im talking the mainstream commercial bands, etc.

And as for Rap.. dont get me started. Sorry to all rap lovers, but I just cannot relate or listen to rap. It goes against everything I call 'music'. If I had to like rap, and I mean if I HAD to, then it would be the early stuff.. the non-gangster Synth stuff (Tune into Wildstyle in GTAVC and you'll know what I mean).

For all people who wanna know info about Progressive Rock/Metal:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_metal

Some Example of Progressive Rock/Metal (Ill choose shorter songs, cos normally songs in this genre tend to be over 10 minutes long)

Overture 1928 - Dream Theater (Progressive Metal)
[yt=425,350][/yt]

A Rite of Passage (Single Version) - Dream Theater (Progressive Metal)
[yt=425,350][/yt]

Xanadu - Rush (Progressive Rock)
[yt=425,350][/yt]

Time - Pink Floyd (Progressive Rock)
[yt=425,350][/yt]

The main reason behind why Progressive Rock isnt mainstream is because of the long songs, obviously.. you woulnt hear this on the radio, it being 24 minutes long:

Octavarium - Dream Theater (Part 1)
[yt=425,350][/yt]

Part 2
[yt=425,350][/yt]

Part 3
[yt=425,350][/yt]

In my opinion, this is a WORK OF ART. But maybe cos people are so used to simple music, they proberly just find this boring and doesnt make sense.
You gotta be open minded and good at taking alot of musical infomation in at once, to like Progressive Rock.

Also, it seems that musicians and people who understand musical theory more such as time signatures, like progressive Rock.

I understand if you can't relate to rap, I can't relate very good to other kinds of music, so it's kind of the same thing, but different music genres. I just can't stand listening to Techno, for example.
My sister listens to stuff like Green Day, The Used, Kill Hannah, etc and she even kind of likes some songs by Necro and other rappers that I showed to her, but I usually can't stand her music. But I have big respect for that it's not some senseless crap about the usual stuff played on the radio nowadays. Same goes for every one else of you.

I love Rock N' Roll. Well, anything with a nice guitar lick is a good song to me.

My mates, typically are all into Rap, Hip Hop and RNB, and I am just not interested. I can only guess they like it because it's the type of music that is most advertised nowadays.

I am thankful that I have my Dad, who brought me up on Rock N' Roll.. taught me guitar and just generally made me appreciate Rock.

I don't have anything against RNB, Rap or Hip Hop, but for me, it's just not my type of music.

One of my favourite songs of all time..

And yes, Traser.. I love the song "Return To Innocence" too.  ;)

Music, like a few other things, is a matter of perception. Asking a question - 'Why do people like that sorta music' may not give you a satisfactory answer cuz the answer is 'perception'. What you feel is not good music is awesome music for the people who like Death rap or whatever.
Does anyone appreciate good old music anymore? Yes of course. I can tell you a range of songs from the 80s and 90s, my favourites being all of Bryan Adams, songs by Foreigner such as 'Waiting for a girl like you', 'I dont wanna live without you' and 'I wanna know what love is', 'YMCA' by village people(cDa gave me link to that song, boy what an awesome song). For those who havent heard village people here it is :)

Why do people rap about violence or other random stuff? Umm, I think the answer is that their life and events in their life shape who they are to a certain extent. Some of the songs sung by artists clearly speak about their life - Eminem on 'Cleanin up my closet'  for example. Same with Will Smith on 'Just the two of us'. Of course these songs may not be violent I only mentioned them as an example.

In short, why I feel people listen to the music that they do is because of perception.

Well the music i like (2 songs here from same band)

 jester of sorts
You stand holding your court
Over minions of capital hill
In a bath full of blood
All alone, standing still
Under God, you can fire at will

And when (when!)
The devil's angels come
Take your life and lead you
To the flies beneath
Go ahead so we kill (hey!)
And lose the dead who was,
Above us and beneath us,
Waiting in their graves,
It's a nation free for all

A prodigal son
Can't undo what he's done
A figure head of capital crime
With a light shining down
As you fall to your knees
To repent would be nothing but lies

And when (when!)
The devil's angels come
Take your life and lead you
To the flies beneath
Go ahead so we kill (hey!)
And lose the dead who was,
above us and beneath us,
waiting in their graves,
It's a nation free for all

la la la la la la la la la la la (hey!) (hey!).....

Dead beat
Six feet
Dead underground

An eye for an eye
All the leaders are blind
Going once twice and then it goes down

And when (when!)
The devil's angels come
Take your life and lead you
To the flies
Go ahead so we kill (hey!)
And lose the dead who was,
above us and beneath us,
waiting in their graves,
Its a nation free for all

Ladies and gentlemen of the underclass,
The president of the United States of America,
Is Dead!

I don't believe in the politics,
Of chosen fools and hypocrites,
Who walk a line that stretched so fine,
Is death or glory had in mind?

And here we go,
I guess the resolution,
No one knows,
Who'll lead this revolution now,
As tension grows,
The way to a conclusion,

It's too late there's no time (it's too late there's no time)
All for none, none for one, two, three, four

March of the dogs,
To a beat of disillusion
Sworn under god,
Breeding panic and confusion,
The white flag is down,
Send in the clowns,
The carnival of sins is now going to begin,

It may be I'm a pessimist,
But I say we need an exorcist,
The root of all evil standing tall,
Under god and above us all,

And here we go,
Again in desperation,
All we know,
Is confusion and frustration,
As tension grows,
No vision of salvation

It's too late there's no time (it's too late there's no time)
All for none, none for one, two, three, four

March of the dogs,
To a beat of disillusion
Sworn under God,
Breeding panic and confusion,
The white flag is down,
Send in the clowns,
The carnival of sins is now going to begin,

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
A-one, two, three, four

Another president dead,
Because they blew off his head,
No more neck to be red,
Yes to heaven he fled,
Was it something he said,
Because of who's in his bed,
By who will we be led?
From whose hand will we be fed?
All the lies by the lying liars who said
We'll be fine,
It's OK,
Hey look mom no head

Blah Blah Blah Blah...
(It's the carnival of sins,
and a one two three go!
it's alright I said go!
one two three I say go!
It's ok, it's alright)

so yeh im not sure if alot of people from Argonath like to listen to this music but i love it :P

It allows Aliens to take over your computer and watch space porn.
