A bit of help of how the Mafia works:
The structure of an American-Italian family.

The Boss.

He's the head of the family. He delegates assignments to the Capo's. He has a close relationship with the Underboss and the Consigliere, which he discuss business with and. He usually stays around them and some of the Capo's aswell. He also takes information and money directly from the Capo's. Don't ever question your Boss in public, don't ever call him the boss in public. Don't badmouth your boss, as it may get you whacked. If you think that something is wrong, go see him personally and tell him that you are 'worried' about this and that. In that way you gain respect. By no mean am I talking about wiseguys and below here. If you made it you're still very very lucky if you get the chance to speak with the Boss. He keeps the family together and decides who has to get whacked, who gets to live, who gets promoted and demoted etc etc. Usually he sits in the Mafia Commission. The Boss is not invulnerable and if he gets too greedy or draws too much heat the Oldman himself might end up in the weeds. Paul Castellano as an example. Though, he got killed without permission from the Commission by Gotti. It's known as the most ballsiest hit ever because of that. Gotti is often an 'exception' when you're talking about Bosses, he did everything the other way.

Underboss.

The underboss of the family. When the Boss is away this guy has control of the family. Keeps an eye on the Capo's, making sure that they are doing what they're supposed to do. Takes orders directly from the Boss.

Consigliere.

Advisor to the family. Usually financial matters but also other problems that may occur.

Captain.

Has been privilaged with his own crew. The crew is made out of soldiers and associates. This guy should know and love his crew, he should take care of his crew and make them love him. He pays money directly to the Boss that his crew have earned every week. Him and his crew also takes care of hits that's been ordered from the top. He takes orders from the
Boss himself. Often runs his own legitimate businesses. Gets a piece of the pie from the top aswell.

Soldier.

Made members of the family. They are a friend of ours and should always be treated as such. He has his own rackets and clients, every week he pays xx percent of his earnings to his Capo. His job is to make the Capo happy, treat your Capo with respect and as a father, and perhaps one day you may end up having your own crew. Made guys can talk business openly with other made members, as associates can't.

Associate.

Takes orders from everyone above him, doesn't have much to say in any matter unless it involves another associate. The less you talk, the better. It's all about the way you act. If it's information that might harm the family he is to immediatly pass the word on to his tutor. His main objective is to earn money. From extortion, gambling rackets, even drug dealing. But, never ever openly say that you're in to drug dealing. And if you're find being a junkie yourself, you'll most likely get told to straighten up or even get whacked. Pays xx percent of his earnings to his Capo or his tutor.

Omerta: Omerta is a code of silence that forbids mafiosi from betraying their comrades to the authorities. The penalty for transgression is death, and relatives of the turncoat may also be murdered. To a degree, Cosa Nostra also imposes this code on the general population, persecuting any citizen who aids the authorities.

The Ten Commandments:
   1. No one can present himself directly to another of our friends. There must be a third person to do it.
   2. Never look at the wives of friends.
   3. Never be seen with cops.
   4. Don't go to pubs and clubs.
   5. Always being available for Cosa Nostra is a duty - even if your wife is about to give birth.
   6. Appointments must absolutely be respected.
   7. Wives must be treated with respect.
   8. When asked for any information, the answer must be the truth.
   9. Money cannot be appropriated if it belongs to others or to other families.
  10. People who can't be part of Cosa Nostra: anyone who has a close relative in the police, anyone with a two-timing relative in the family, anyone who behaves badly and doesn't hold to moral values.
