I'm doing another custom PC build, and I can't decide which parts would suit the usage I require most.

I'm currently thinking along these specifications:
  • Motherboard: ASUS RAMPAGE II EXTREME X58/ASUS RAMPAGE FORMULA X48/EVGA X58 SLI/
    EVGA 680i
  • Graphics Card: XFX Radeon HD 4890/XFX Radeon HD 4850/PNY NVIDIA 9800GT
  • Power Supply: 750W Corsair Power Supply Unit - TX750W
  • CPU: Intel 2 Quad Core Q9450/Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200/Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300
  • RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS2 PC-6400 800MHz DDR2 RAM/4GB OCZ Platinum Edition PC2-8500 DDR2 RAM/OCZ RAM MEMORY 4GB KIT (2X2048) NVIDIA SLI - READY EDITION DDR2 PC2 6400800MHZ DUAL CHANNEL EPP 5-4-4-15 NVIDIA XTC HEATSPREADER

At the moment, I've only listed the parts that matter most. Hard Drives, DVD Drives, etc are not my priority.

From the list that I have written above, I'd like to be advised upon which parts are the best for 'casual gaming/multimedia' use. Please do not tell me the best parts, as even I know this, but I'd like to know which would suit the use I require.

As regards to the power supply, I have listed it as I'm haven't researched the power requirements of any of the PC components. I'm not sure if the PSU I have chosen can run with all of the components listed, so I've left it for someone who may know. ;)

  • Motherboard: ASUS RAMPAGE II EXTREME X58/ASUS RAMPAGE FORMULA X48/EVGA X58 SLI/
    EVGA 680i
  • Graphics Card: XFX Radeon HD 4890/XFX Radeon HD 4850/PNY NVIDIA 9800GT
  • Power Supply: 750W Corsair Power Supply Unit - TX750W
  • CPU: Intel 2 Quad Core Q9450/Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200/Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300
  • RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS2 PC-6400 800MHz DDR2 RAM/4GB OCZ Platinum Edition PC2-8500 DDR2 RAM/OCZ RAM MEMORY 4GB KIT (2X2048) NVIDIA SLI - READY EDITION DDR2 PC2 6400800MHZ DUAL CHANNEL EPP 5-4-4-15 NVIDIA XTC HEATSPREADER
All I can say - FAIL.
Motherboard:ASUS Rampage II GENE, LGA1366, X58, DDR3, SLI & CrossFire
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 5870/5970
Power Supply: Corsair HX520W
CPU: Intel Core i7 920
RAM:Corsair Intel Core i7 6GB Kit PC3-10666, 1333MHz, 3x240 DIMM 6GB Kit(3x2048MB)

May cost a little bit, but no worth of spending your money to LGA-775 anymore.
Also Radeon HD 4890 runs out of power in newer games (what will come, DX11).
Radeon HD 5970 is the most powerfull video card ever made, HD 5870 is the most powerfull single-GPU video card ever made. And for your own sake, don't buy XFX-Ati combination.. Take ASUS or Sapphire..
And the components you put there... Even 400W is enough to run them...

And yes, if you don't want the best parts, you can take HD 4890/GTX 285, but I'd suggest you to buy HD 5870 or 5970.
The CPU and mobo you put there, not compatible.
And RAM should be DDR3, as there is no difference in price anymore.. 4Gb DDR3 ~80 euro, same for DDR2.

HD 4850 runs out of power in now-a-days games, 9800 GT is what I have, but like HD 4850, runs out of power..
And like I said before, buy Core i5 / Core i7, it's no worth of buying Core 2 Duo/Quad anymore...

/facepalm

If I wanted to tell me the best parts in the world, I would've said that. I don't intend on using this computer for playing Crysis with 5000x3000 res, 900AA and maximum settings..

I need a computer which I can use for casual gaming.

My post was modified, by a moderator. :|

Anyway, I'm buying an i7 920 or 940, with a Gigabyte EX58 UD5 Motherboard. DDR3 in the UK is more than twice as expensive as DDR2, but I've decided on buying 4GB DDR3 RAM. I'm still not sure as regards to which graphics card I should buy. I really don't want to buy a 5800 series card from ATI, as I want to buy something from the NVIDIA GTX 300 series.

Less than twice comparing to HD 4890, when checking price/power ratio, HD 5870 is the best atm.
Core i7 920 is CHEAPER than Q9550, yet alot more powerfull.
Q9450 is no difference to Q9550, Q8x00 is the worst Quad ever made.
So if I were you, I'd else turn to AMD Phenom II, or stop whining at me.
DDR3 beats DDR2, price difference ~10-20

I myself dont like ATI, but 5800 series have Directx 11 support and they are cheaper, nvidia gtx 300 series is yet to come.

yayayayayaya

My Gigabyte EX58 Extreme Motherboard has arrived, and my 750W power supply. I've placed order on an Intel Core i7 920 (D0 model) which should arrive pretty soon, by my reckoning. :D

Need to get RAM, HDD, PC case, sound card, and coolers. I think I'm done after that. : )

EDIT:

lol.

Add a XFX Radeon HD 5870 Graphics Card to that. I've just decided to follow Kessu's advice and get a DX11 card. When the GTX 300 series comes out though, I'm going to return this card and get a GTX 3--. :D

EDIT2:

Cancelled my order on the 5870 and replaced it with a 5970. :D

I've gone all ATI-ish. :P

I'm about half way through building my PC. Currently waiting on my RAM and gfx card. D:

Will post some pics of the inside of my PC soon.

if i would be you, i would aim on a Nvidia Graphic card since most games novadays are developed for Nvidia, and you get out most from Nvidia :P

All PMs saying "Look at my unban request!!11" will be ignored.

In need of assistance? Please send me a forum PM instead of contacting me ingame. Whenever i am ingame, i'm most likely busy with something else which means i wont be able to help you there and then.

You've been living under a rock?
ATi cards works as good as nVidia cards in most games, expect the ones with PhysX, as it is only for nVidia..
And also, Ati is the first with DX11 graphics, ATi has the most powerfull single-GPU card AND dual-GPU card..
nVidia is nothing against ATi right now, as it even stopped making GTX 275/285/295 cards...

Why 6Gb DDR3 on AMD platform? AMD does not have triple-channel support, and there are no 3 Gb RAM "sticks"...
4Gb or 8Gb of DDR3 RAM on AMD platform, to Dual-channel..

Yes, it may work, but your performance is better when dual-channel is enabled..
Also, if you hate AMD, how can you buy ATi, as it is AMDs?
