My parents are seperated but he lives like..behind my house.. it's complicated shizzle.

Actually the safest way is to remove the SSID broadcasting, and give your network a strange name. While a WiFi detector might still show it, without knowing the network name it is going to be hard to connect, so any hacker would just find a more easy one.
It also make that you can connect without a lot of passwords from any PC, just by entering the network name.
