as yeah actually Football by Americans is a game where you at first kick the egg-shape "ball"m then other team catch it with their hand and try to run over to your line. At some points they got this big H from what through they again try to kick their egg-shaped ball.

So it is quite logical to call a game, where main event is running with a large egg in your hand - a football.
