Cash Money Records
History

Cash Money Records is a record label founded by brothers Bryan "Birdman" Williams and Ronald "Slim" Williams. Today it operates as a subsidiary of Universal Music Group, and is distributed by Universal Motown Republic Group. Started in 1991 in New Orleans, LA and later moved to Miami Florida, due to destruction of Hurricane Katrina.

Beginnings
For its first few years (1992 -1997), Cash Money played host to a number of local releases by artists, selling hundreds of thousands of albums without ever releasing a music video or having a Billboard hit. Some of the label's releases garnered some regional success in New Orleans and Louisiana, but the label was little known to the national rap scene. Some of the early artists on the label included the group U.N.L.V. (Uptown Niggas Living Violently), Kilo G, Lil Slim, and PxMxWx. In 1995, the label signed young rappers B.G. and Lil Wayne. They were the first signees of what would be the second wave of Cash Money artists. In 1997 those two, plus Juvenile (who had already been regionally successful before Cash Money), and Turk formed the group the Hot Boys. They would become the label's most well known artists, though initially they still didn't make much impact outside of the region.

Mainstream Exposure
Cash Money's big break came in 1997 when the Hot Boys, B.G. and Juvenile in particular, caught the attention of Universal Records executives. In 1998, Cash Money signed a $30 million pressing and distribution contract with Universal, entitling the label to 85% of its royalties, 50% of its publishing revenues and ownership of all masters. After the deal Cash Money would reach success it hadn't come close to previously. The release of Juvenile's 1998 album 400 Degreez, which was certified 4X Platinum by the RIAA , solidified Cash Money as a powerful label in the national hip-hop scene. Later albums in 1999 such as the Hot Boys' Guerrilla Warfare, B.G.'s Chopper City in the Ghetto, and Lil Wayne's Tha Block Is Hot also saw great chart success and furthered the label's reputation. These albums contained major Billboard hits such as Juvenile's "Back That Azz Up" (#19 on the Billboard Hot 100), B.G.'s "Bling Bling" (#36), and the Hot Boys' "I Need a Hot Girl" (#65). All of Cash Money's albums and singles in this period were solely produced by the label's in-house producer, Mannie Fresh.

Continued Success/21st Century
The label's success continued into the 21st century. Between 2001 and 2003, the label sold 7 million albums. The song "Still Fly" by the Big Tymers was nominated for two Grammy Awards. However, B.G. and Juvenile later left the label in 2002, claiming financial mismanagement. In April 2003, Juvenile returned to the label for a reported $4 million deal, and in return, he signed over the rights to Juve The Great, an album which would go on to sell over a million copies and contained the Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit "Slow Motion". Cash Money also signed deals with several other artists, including Sean John and Jacob the Jeweler.

In 2007, former Hot Boy member Lil Wayne was named president of Cash Money Records and CEO of Young Money Entertainment, giving the rapper full creative control over all releases under the two labels. Later that year, however, Lil Wayne stepped down as president to focus on his career, especially Tha Carter III. In 2008, Lil Wayne re-signed with Cash Money, ensuring that his next few albums will be produced by the label. In September 2008, the label diversified by releasing rocker Kevin Rudolf's smash-hit debut single "Let It Rock" featuring label-mate Lil Wayne. On October 15, 2008 at the MOBO Awards, British R&B singer Jay Sean announced that he had signed with Cash Money Records.

In February 2009, the Williams brothers were featured in CNBC's Newbos: The Rise of America's New Black Overclass, a documentary show profiling several black multi-millionaires. In early 2009 former Roc-A-Fella Records Artist Freeway and 2 Pistols signed with the label. On August 16, 2009, Bow Wow announced that he signed with Cash Money Records.







CEO. Ronald "Slim" Williams (born 1967) is the co-founder of Cash Money Records along with his younger brother Bryan "Birdman" Williams. However, Williams doesn't rap. Along with his younger brother, Birdman, he is the executive producer for much of Cash Money artist' albums, especially Lil Wayne. He also appeared in Lil Wayne's Fireman video. In February 2009, the Williams brothers were featured in CNBC's Newbos: The Rise of America's New Black Overclass, a documentary show profiling several black multi-millionaires. Along with Birdman, Mack Maine, Cortez Bryant, and other past and present Cash Money artist, they starred in Lil Wayne's Behind The Music episode, which premiered September 10, 2009. Williams is also known as "The Godfather" for his behind the scenes role at Cash Money Records.



CEO. Bryan Williams (born February 15, 1969), better known by his stage name Birdman or Baby, is an American rapper and record executive from New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the co-founder of Cash Money Records and one half of the duo Big Tymers. Along with his releases with Big Tymers and for his solo career, Birdman recorded a collaboration album and numerous tracks with Lil Wayne. He was named one of the top 13 most street artists by XXL. Birdman was born and raised in Uptown New Orleans. He used his first moniker B-32 (Baby with the 32 Golds) and released his only independent album I Need a Bag of Dope in 1993. Birdman was arrested and charged with possession of more than two ounces of marijuana in November 2007. He was released on $1,500 bond.





Signed: 1991-present. Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. (born September 27, 1982), better known by his stage name Lil Wayne, is an American rapper. At age of nine, Lil Wayne joined Cash Money Records as the youngest member of the label, and half of the duo, The B.G.'z, with B.G.. In 1997, Lil Wayne joined the group Hot Boys, which also included rappers Juvenile, B.G., and Turk. Hot Boys debuted with Get It How U Live! that year. Lil Wayne gained most of his success with the group's major selling album Guerrilla Warfare, released in 1999. Also in 1999, Lil Wayne released his Platinum debut album Tha Block Is Hot, selling over one million copies in the U.S.

Although his next two albums Lights Out (2000) and 500 Degreez (2002) were not as successful (only reaching Gold status), Lil Wayne reached higher popularity in 2004 with Tha Carter, which included the single "Go D.J." Wayne also appeared on the Destiny's Child top ten single "Soldier" that year. In 2005, the sequel to Tha Carter, Tha Carter II, was released. In 2006 and 2007, Lil Wayne released several mixtapes and appeared on several popular rap and R&B singles. His most successful album, Tha Carter III, was released in 2008 which went on to sell 1.1 million copies in the U.S. its first week of release. It included the number-one single "Lollipop" and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Lil Wayne released his debut rock album, Rebirth, in 2010 to primarily negative reception from critics. The album eventually went gold. In March 2010, Lil Wayne began serving an 8 month prison sentence in New York after being convicted of criminal possession of a weapon stemming from an incident in July 2007.




Signed: 1996-2001. Terius Gray, better known by his stage name Juvenile, (born March 26, 1975) is an American rapper, He is also a former member of hip-hop group the Hot Boys . At the age of 19, he began recording raps, releasing his debut album Being Myself in 1995. The album gave name to the southern rap style known as "bounce". The album was followed by Solja Rags in 1997; its underground popularity led to the major-label release of 400 Degreez in 1998. After releasing Tha G-Code in 1999 and Project English in 2001, Juvenile left Cash Money Records. On an interview with DJ Kay Slay, Juvenile stated that Birdman "false claimed his hood", leading to him departing from the record label.

In 2003, he returned to Cash Money to record Juve the Great, spawning the number-one hit "Slow Motion". Following this album he again left Cash Money, and in 2006 he was signed to Atlantic Records. He released Reality Check under that label. He released his eighth studio album, titled Cocky & Confident, on December 1, 2009. He released his ninth studio album, titled Beast Mode, on July 6, 2010.



Signed: 1993-2001, rejoined in 2010, Christopher Dorsey (born September 3, 1980), better known by his stage name B.G. (short for "Baby Gangsta" or "B. Gizzle"'), is an American rapper, and actor, from New Orleans, Louisiana. He began his music career signed to Cash Money Records in 1993 with Lil Wayne as half of the duo "The B.G.'z". Both, along with rappers Juvenile and Turk collectively formed the group, the Hot Boys in 1997. In 2001, B.G. resigned from Cash Money Records, and created his own label, Chopper City Records. In 2007, B.G signed with Atlantic Records, releasing one album under the label. He later returned to Cash Money Records in 2010.

He was leaving the home of his girlfriend in Uptown New Orleans when he was stopped by the police in New Orleans. During a search of the vehicle police found three guns, two of which were reported stolen. Police also found loaded magazines and two extended clips. B.G. was booked into the Orleans Parish Prison on an illegal carrying of weapons charge. B.G. appeared in court on November 5 and his incarceration and bond information are unknown to the press at the time.





Signed: 1993-2005. Byron O. Thomas, (born March 20, 1969) better known by his stage name Mannie Fresh, is currently an artist and hip-hop producer who records for Def Jam South. He is probably most famous for his time producing tracks for Cash Money Records from 1993 to 2005, and one half of the hip-hop duo, the Big Tymers with Birdman. In 1985, Thomas joined New York Incorporated, which David Jeffries of all music asserted was the first hip hop crew of New Orleans. A DJ at parties, he got the attention of emcee Gregory D. The duo started a group and debuted with a Miami Bass album titled Throw Down in 1987 on D&D Records.

Thomas met Bryan "Baby" Williams, who gave him an opportunity to become the in-house producer of his record label Cash Money Records. With Williams's help, Thomas made chart-topping albums for the Hot Boys, which was composed of Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, and Turk, producing all of the group's singles. He also produced all tracks on the members solo works as well. Later, Thomas formed the Big Tymers along with Williams, as Mannie Fresh and Birdman respectively, and released five albums. In 2004, he released his own debut album The Mind of Mannie Fresh, which consisted of 30 tracks and featured the single "Real Big," which failed to top the charts. In 2005, he split from Cash Money for financial reasons, and later joined Def Jam South, to which he is currently signed.

On November 28, 2007, Mannie Fresh's sister Angela Bryant was found dead in her Algiers, New Orleans, home. Thomas' two children, ages 2 and 7, were found tied up inside the home but neither were injured. On October 27, 2009, Mannie Fresh released a second solo studio album, titled Return of the Ballin'.



Signed: 2009-present. Aubrey Drake Graham (born October 24, 1986), who records under the mononym Drake, is a Canadian recording artist and actor. He originally became known for playing character Jimmy Brooks on the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation. Graham continued to recognize a close affiliation with Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment, before officially signing with the record label in June 2009. In November 2009, Lil Wayne released a statement announcing that Drake's first studio album, Thank Me Later, had been completed; the album was released on June 15, 2010 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.

Graham has worked with several other hip-hop artist such as Lil Wayne, Jeezy, Kanye West, Eminem, and Jay-Z. With the success of his mixtape turned EP So Far Gone, Graham has been nominated for several awards including the Grammys; even being selected to perform at the 2010 Grammy awards. Graham also won several awards, including two Juno Awards in 2010 for Best New Artist, and Rap Recording of the Year.
