Okay, my PC is a Windows 7 and I booted it like 30 mins ago. It took ages to load up for some reason at the welcome stage to be followed by an annoyingly long 'Preparing your desktop' message on the loading screen in the same font as the 'Welcome'. After that the desktop came up
with much less icons as usual and the desktop had returned to its default Windows 7 background. It had a few things like itunes, adobe reader
quicktime and firefox but nothing else really considering half of my desktop was filled with icons. I've searched Google for possible solutions and it seems like this is quite a common problem amongst Windows 7 users so I was hoping that someone here could shed some light on how to fix this error.

I've already restarted the computer and logged on and off several times in vain and in addition have made a new administrator profile to no avail. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Occasionally, your windows profile might not be read correctly. There may be several reasons behind this, including antivirus problems.

Please try following the steps here or here and tell me what comes out.

Just did the first hyperlink, it's what comes up on Windows too as a solution. It took like an hour to move all my stuff to another profile but I'll relog now and see how that went. Only problem was that I couldn't find the three files in #6 so I ended up moving all the folders.
