What's the difference between 'code' and 'characters'? It's one thing (character encoding system/format) - UTF-8, isn't it?

Characters are text that are simply displayed. Code is text that is executed.

Nope. Appears the issue was made even more common by the forum restoration and upgrade. My guess at this point is the files are getting messed up from the upgrade with mods being installed throughout the events because the same issue broke the search function on FBI forums, and messed up the theme in a few ways. FBI forums themselves seem to have since fixed their search issue, but it seems the theme issues still exist, just as Argo Forum has it's own. Unfortunately SMF 2 stopped auto-uninstalling mods during upgrades a few RC versions back, so people didn't notice and they had been upgrading their forums while incompatible mods, or just mods in general, were still installed, thus bugging up all the code. :P
