http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16040655

"Astronomers have confirmed the existence of an Earth-like planet in the "habitable zone" around a star not unlike our own.

The planet, Kepler 22-b, lies about 600 light-years away and is about 2.4 times the size of Earth, and has a temperature of about 22C.

It is the closest confirmed planet yet to one like ours - an "Earth 2.0".

However, the team does not yet know if Kepler 22-b is made mostly of rock, gas or liquid.

During the conference at which the result was announced, the Kepler team also said that it had spotted some 1,094 new candidate planets - nearly doubling the telescope's haul of potential far-flung worlds.

Kepler 22-b was one of 54 exoplanet candidates in habitable zones reported by the Kepler team in February, and is just the first to be formally confirmed using other telescopes.

More of these "Earth 2.0" candidates are likely to be confirmed in the near future, though a redefinition of the habitable zone's boundaries has brought that number down to 48. Ten of those are Earth-sized."

Bring a packed-lunch everyone!

>600 light years

>We will never reach the speed of light

I think out best bet is Gliese 581c/d for a habitable world.

When you die on this planet, you will almost certainly be born on another.

We won't be habiting any other planets in our life time, though we will definitely discover habitable ones.

I, for no good reason at all, believe we will be born again to someone or something else, not knowing that we already died.

I would like to believe that I'd be able to visit another planet in my lifetime and live there. But I'm far too logical to believe that we'll be able to do so in such a relatively short amount of time, no matter how fast we evolve technologically.

I would also like to believe that I get another chance to live, but I live the idea that after I pass on, I'll be at peace. Hence the Agnosticism. Any who, not a discussion on the afterlife :P

Interesting find Alsatian, hopefully it's the place my great great great..... great great great... great... ... great grand kids will be one day. Because I believe that unfortunately, we'll inevitably destroy the world we are currently inhabiting. At this rate, we might wipe ourselves out before we even get close to leaving our planet to inhabit others. :P

If America finds oil there, it will only be a matter of years before it gets inhabited.
