carcol.dat safe to change?

Is it safely to change carcol.dat so my cop car: Dutch 'Politie' BMW M3 for GTA:SA V1 does have the stripes on the side?
Or does this also change handling or something?

If i remember right all it handles is the vehicle colours. It's name kind of hints towards that too.

As with any modification though do take care. Topic needn't be deleted either as someone at some point in the future may want to ask the same question as you.
