Sleeping is right up there with beer, boobs and revenge as one of life's simplest, grandest pleasures. Can sleeping be dangerous? Sure, people sometimes do weird shit while asleep, but unless you're driving a car, operating heavy equipment or walking tightrope over a volcano, that's not going to kill you. Science knows all sorts of reasons why too little sleep can be dangerous, so by extension, getting extra sleep must be like a dip in the hot tub of youth (fountains are for old people).

But of course, life is not run by a system of checks and balances; it's run by horrifying trauma and murderous coincidence. That's probably why a recent British study conversely showed that sleeping too much--more than seven hours a night--doubles your chances of dying within 11 to 17 years, and not even from cardiovascular disease like those lucky bastards with insomnia. And we'd like to clarify here; they're not saying that an extra hour of sleep will shorten your twilight years a little. They're saying that, by hitting the snooze button, you're less likely to see the end of this goddamn decade.

They aren't really sure why, but Francesco Cappuccino (who sounds more like a Carmen Sandiego character than the respectable scientist he is) stated that "some candidate causes for this include depression, low socio-economic status and cancer-related fatigue." So in some cases, the case studies were poor depressed cancer patients, which makes sense. For the rest of them, it was "f**ked if we know. Get up earlier."

So there you go: Sleep exactly seven hours a night, not a minute more, not a minute less--because a late coffee on one side, and you'll have a heart attack; a snooze button on the other, and you will just mysteriously f**king die within the next 10 years.

Sleep tight.

Some people swear they can get by on fewer hours and still feel fine. But mental alertness and a lack of headaches aren’t the only cues of how they’re handling sleep deprivation.

“There are some people who are more resistant to the effects of sleep deprivation than others,” says Stuart Quan, MD, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School’s division of sleep medicine. “Functionally, they’re OK, but metabolically, they may not be doing OK. The solution [to sleep deprivation] is not going out and drinking a couple of cans of Red Bull. The solution is to get more sleep.”

Skipping sleep has been linked to less-threatening problems -- like a headache -- and even life-threatening ones and earlier death.

Though the research doesn't prove that sleep alone was to blame for any of those things, there's no downside to getting a good night's sleep. Not convinced? Here are seven conditions that may be tied to a sleep shortfall:

1. Obesity
2. Heart disease
3. Diabetes
4. Headaches
5. Depression
6. Lapses of attention/delayed reaction times
7. Death

So, good luck with your lack of sleeping. That is unless you are using uberman method.

Let's start with the biggest time-waster of all: sleep. Every night, you have to bend to Big Slumber's twisted whims, sacrificing perfectly good video game and pornography time just to lay completely motionless in week-old laundry for eight hours. We need to gut sleep like the little bitch it is, and for that, we turn to something called polyphasic sleeping. The basic idea is that there are five stages to normal sleep, but only one of those is actually important: the REM phase, where dreaming happens. By cutting out the chaff, you can shake down your brain until it gives up and learns to slip directly into REM sleep the second you close your eyes, thus streamlining the process. It's basically mugging the shit out of your own mind, and then pilfering the sweet dream-meats within while it lies beaten and bloody on the floor. There are several types of polyphasic schedules, but for the purposes of this test, I will be using the Uberman system, which consists of sleeping only 20 minutes per session, once every four hours.

Uberman: Terrorize your brain.

Ideally, once you've grown accustomed to that schedule, you'll only need a total of two hours of sleep for every 24-hour period. I started this last night, and it's working pretty OK so far. I'm a bit tired now, but I find that the naps refresh me just enough to keep going. However, it is supposed to take roughly a week to retrain your brain for optimal sleeping habits, so this is more of a passive test for now. We'll see how it progresses as time passes.

And we do not try to be real life, as why would you ever play real life if you have one ? We play the GTA universe, and our players should try to live in the GTA world, not the real one.

Overrated or not, it is needed. I'm really jealous of the people who can sleep for over 5 hours. I need sleep, alot of it, but I cannot get it because for around 3 years now I'm battling Insomnia. No matter how tired I am I just can't get the needed sleep, in most cases I'm lucky if I get 3 hours of it. So people who CAN sleep...Enjoy the possibility, do it for yourselves, because there is nothing worse than not being able to sleep at night and having to drink huge ammounts of coffee just to keep up for half the day...

Yeah, I too have insomnia. Even if I try to lay down and sleep, I simply can't. I do drink coffee in the mornings for an extra kick, then around mid-day find my self drinking a cup of cappuccino xD. But not really a lot. I normally drink water and rarely drink soda/pop.

I have been up in 72 hours straight (more or less) once.. It was last august. Yes, I was extremely tired but I was able to communicate, eat, drive, go on the city, cook food without any issues.
During school I can sleep upto max six hours, this going on for a whole year (take away the winter break) and I am getting used to it. I wouldn't say it's overrated, nor underestimated but it's up to each individual how much sleeps (s)he feels is needed to be fully operational.

Keep up like that, but it'll pay off when you will get older. And you'll say "Damn, i needed to sleep more" . Remember that being psychically tired is much more dangerous than being phisycally
I'm working with a guy who is fifty eight years old, working 250 to 300 hours a month, sleeping at most four hours. He is more positive and healthy than me.
It is all in your head if you want to go around being a tired sloth once you wake up, or if you can shake that off you and continue off being positive instead of complaining about it.

Of course, everybody needs a day or two a month to really lay back and take it easy, nonetheless the true story is: yes, it's too overrated to sleep.

Just looking at the time now at 2:49 AM...

Its been like now for this... a long time. Not the time, the going to rather 5am and getting up at the sleep of body, by which I mean rather. Late body say 4 hours of conversations is properly for the hours to function operate. Yet, I get work programming all day of night a day, and can fully "professionals" a vehicle, have normal crack, and ass is really 5 to 6 long again till late at night without much issue.

I wonder if the story of metabolism is actually just another something like amount, every person pretty. Any required?
