I see no purpose for Russia to defend Iran, What I see is Russia having an excuse to attack someone like Georgia again while the US and EU are busy with other crap and most likely If there is going to be a war the EU as a nation will offcialy begin and say good by to the sovereignty of Continental Europe, Only the UK has the power and will to actually not Join, However here is one problem for Iran the US has bases located in Iraq and Afghanistan on both its border as well as Israel willing to step in at any time. Iran wouldn't last long but knowing the US it wouldn't just attack it would occupy Iran for "National Security" or "Spreading Democracy" while letting other Arab nations in the area go to hell with there own "revolutions" The more and more I think about 2012 doomsday plots/conspiracy the less I see the world exploding and ending however, the more I see something drastically changing in terms of how the world operates. Imagine if all the North African nations with Syria and Jordan (hell all of the Middle East) just went democratic (Turkey is still Democratic right?) this would be a HUGE cultural change in at least Arab culture as it has be mainly dominated by Religious leaders, Imperialist and Dictators, I for one see this as a Potential for the Arab people to make something new for there culture, and that would be a major change in the world and how things would operate.

However if Russia deiced its wants to be the Soviet Capitalist Empire of Russia, WW3 will happen no question.
