Here in the Philippines, storms and floods like this are a more frequent occurrence. However, our infrastructure (despite its economic poverty) is better designed to stand the impact of storms, unlike the cheap building materials common on the east coast.

Unfortunately, this is also what happens when greedy politicians veto millions in storm prevention that could have saved more lives.

Poor people... They didn't do anything bad, why did the hurricane have to hit them so hard?

Welcome to the natural world

As long as humanity can be affected by disease and natural disasters, our species will remain subject to natural selection as we know it.

It really is incredible how much terror power outages can cause. Without power, nearly everyone (at least in my town) lost their minds. They needed to get their hands on something electronic; everyone needed to charge their phones, their iPods, and laptops. There's a highway rest stop a few blocks away from my house. When I went there to charge my family's phones, there was a group of people in the corner, playing with an Xbox360 plugged in to the television owned by the rest stop. I guess this really shows how much electricity really means to all of us.

On another note, Governor Christie has placed a gasoline ration plan, where cars with plates with the last numerical value being odd can only fill their tanks up on 'odd' days, and even values on 'even' days. However, even with this rule, the lines at gas stations are incredible long. PSE&G, our electrical company, stated that the power should be restored in my township some time before Monday, November 5th. I hope things really settle down by then.

From what I'm hearing, another storm is hitting the New York/New Jersey area and blanketing them with heavy snow on top of the already-existing debris.

In a stroke of good news, however, multiple CBS-owned TV and radio stations, including some very popular ones, here in Sacramento, California have teamed up to raise money with the Red Cross for a hurricane relief fund. As of this moment, since JUST 5:00 A.M. this morning, (it is 9:48 A.M. now), they have raised over $27,500 USD.

After seeing Katrina, I think people understand this time how truly devastating this storm really was. I'm happy to finally see people getting together to help one another with little motivation even being required to do so.

Edit: As of 9:56 A.M., it is now at exactly $28,500 USD!
