Bah..I already installed Skype 4 times, and always uninstalled it as I just couldn't get used to its interface. I prefer text-based communication at all, and Skype cannot compare with MSN in that.

I suppose this was something seen coming... it's a but like what Google has done. There are so many products and services under Microsoft's name right now that you wonder which account you're meant to use for each one.
Of course, it's quite good to have one account for all of them and to have one 'control remote' or 'portal' connecting you to everything else but it's a bit more strange for older users who have been with MSN (then later, Live) for years.

I guess it's one way for Microsoft to keep up with a lot of the other things related to social networking nowadays.

I like MSN because its chat based, it is designed for text chat. Skype is designed for videos and voice messaging, while it does have a text chat based element it doesn't match that ability of MSNs. Also Skype groups aren't as secure as MSNs, as in MSN only group owners/co-owners can invite new people, in Skype is a free ballpark and for groups like the FBI who uitilze the secure features of MSNs groups and skydrive, what are we stuck with? Ability for some random agent to get bored and invite strangers in?

However, I do agree that as a business choice this was a great move for Microsoft. As Microsoft lack good developers anyways, they will be able to have them focus on a single product rather two products that compete with each other. Additionally having two products compete when one (Skype) that produces income and the other (MSN) which does not (other than ads) isn't a good business model. So in that sense, its a great idea and perfect plan.

You can make skype groups invite-only, and even control who can talk, however it is not very user friendly as you have to use commands. More info : https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10042/what-are-chat-commands-and-roles  - never mind, already mentioned

btw, MSN does (or at least used to) have paid phone calls, but they were never really popular

I don't hate skype's chat, I just find MSN's group system easier. Based on ads from Microsoft isn't their goal for Windows and their apps to be useable by 4 year olds? I don't think the skype system meets this simplicity target and MSN does have video and voice chat, plus phone call service.

I'm a PC and I'm 4 and a half, the latest cute Ads from Microsoft.
